Check out
vholdr.com for a neat setup. Kind of pricey but can be used for multiple sports, is lightweight, easy to mount, and sturdy.

Dang! Just drooled on my good work shirt!
Looks like about $350 bucks. That would be perfect for the aeroplane!

Last weekend Erin and I picked up one of
these for $120 from Circuit City. It shoots high definition video directly to a flash card.
I call it our "disposable camcorder." It's HD (albeit not that high quality) and it was cheap. I suspect it'll be used for some abusive purposes before long. I think it's lightweight enough to duct tape to your head if you want a helmet cam.
Here's a sample video with us and our friends skiing like dorks last weekend. You can toggle HD on or off on that page.

Im looking into getting a helmet camera system from "xtreme recall. They are probably one of the most expensive bullet type cams out there but they are also one of the best.

Please have a friend's camcorder rolling when you pull the duct tape out of your hair!

Hey Zane! That was pretty cool video work. Great day on the mountain.
So that camera works off a flash card? I'll have to check one out.

akdrifter, that video was pretty badass. Tell your buddy to check out vimeo.com, it's a much better video hosting resource than youtube.com, especially for HD content.

Hafast,
Thanks for the post. Your camera is half the price of the one I posted but has the same recording resolution. The mounting system is'nt as sturdy but for $150 less I can live with that.

Any new ideas on these helmet cameras. I bought a Sony DCR-HC26 last summer, but I am going to go to a bullet type helmet camera/recorder.
I will sell the Sony if anyone is intersted. It's in real good condition. I paid $150.00 and am open to offers.
It seems that a remote trigger might be nice, but maybe just adds more unnecessay wires.
I would like to hear thoughts and experiences from those that are using them. What features would be important. Operator skill here will be pretty minimal, so user friendliness will be a strong point. Seems to be a lot of them for sale on ebay, pretty reasonable.
Thanks Gary

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Here's one I've looked at.

I'd really like to have something with a remote control, so the camera can be mounted outside the plane, to get away from prop flutter, etc, but be able to control it from inside.
Those less expensive helmet cams look great and have better resolution, as well as being a lot cheaper.
Anyone used any of these that have a remote--there are a couple here that do?

I saw one with a remote to turn it on and off, but haven't seen a remote to aim it. I would imagine with that, you would probably need some kind of monitor to be sure you were aiming at what you wanted?

I don't necessarily care about aiming the camera. Basically looking for a small camera I can mount externally on the plane, and go fly, and control it from inside, without running cables all over creation.
There's a fellow just posted on Supercub.org with a camera mount that can pan, etc, designed to mount on the struts. It looks pretty slick, if that's what you wanted.

Na, I'm Ok with simple and affordable. Which I realize is all relative. But I would like to stay under a couple hundred dollars.
Inside the cabin is fine. I have been using a camera from inside and am happy with the results. I just want hands free. I would like the option of mounting it on the side of my headset, so the camera sees what I see.
Other times, just mounting the small bullet camera on the visor should be fine. I don't like piling stuff up on my glareshield. I don't even like having the compass up there.
I fly in some nice canyons, so I like to share that. Otherwise, it is just in and out of different strips, and showing other what those are like.

If you already have a video camera, check to see if it has a video input, allowing it to take video from another source than it's own built in camera. If so, you could buy an inexpensive bullet camera for less than $100 and mount it anywhere you want, but record with your existing camera.
