Tim,

Do you see something on that camera that indicates it has a remote?? I didn't see one listed, so maybe missed it. I really like the looks of those types, compact and more or less bullet proof.

Pretty much all the Good bullit cams have a cord of some kind that will need to be delt with and the better ones have a small DVR with a screne to veiw what you are seein' through the cam. I have tryed most and they all have their goods and bads but so far the best bang for the buck has been the V.I.O Cam for useablity and features. they have a remote now. Yes it is a little spendy but you get what you pay for.

The Wireless Remote Control
The Wireless Remote Control is a major step forward, and a few steps back as well. I really like the wireless approach since it eliminates cable clutter and allows the remote to be mounted in a variety of locations. The remote works within “close proximity” to the POV1. I found that if the POV.1 is out in the open you can get 6ft, but if you place the POV.1 in a backpack you might get 3ft. The remote can also be configured to operate on different channels. This will allow multiple POV1’s to operate in close proximity to each other. If you wanted to, you could leave the POV1’s all on the same channel and start/stop record multiple units with one remote.

This remote took a few steps backwards in terms of usability. For starters, you cannot power the POV1 on and off using the remote. The power on/off feature has been standard in the LANC protocol for years. If you are really concerned about conserving battery time, then you need to be powering the unit off when you are in between filming sessions. The second step back, is that the communication between the remote and POV.1 is one-way. The remote can talk to the POV1, but not vice-versa. So, the only way to know if the POV.1 is recording when you press REC is to listen for the BEEP that comes out of the POV1. Granted, the beep on the POV1 can be turned up pretty loud - I’m used to looking down at my LANC remote and seeing a flashing Red light when recording. If you place the POV1 in a backpack where the unit is not visible you will have to listen for the BEEP when starting and stopping recording. Also, the LED on the remote does light up, but only when you press the buttons. To provide myself with some comfort, I quickly got in the habit of pressing and holding the REC/TAG button for multiple seconds just to make sure that the signal got through.

VIO acknowledged the usability issues with the remote and they are aware of what the ideal remote feature set is. In the end it came down to cost and engineering. The wireless remote requirement was apparently more critical to the overall usability design, than have it tethered to a cable. I’m assuming the POV.2 (??) will most likely have a bi-directional wireless remote

Has anyone used or looked at this particular model?

Am I thinking correctly that this would be sweet? With the lcd screen you could easily see what you'll be shooting when mounting it and with the remote you could turn it on and off from inside if mounted outside. Plus you could splash mud and water at it.

Any thoughts?

Hard Disk Cameras and Vibration

I have a JVC Everio hard disk camera and came up with a really cheap $3 mount for the Citabria consisting of a rubberized 5/8" c-clamp, thumb screw, and a wing nut. It mounts upside down above my head on the cross bar and has an excellent view out the front. Problem is, I can start recording before takeoff but once I come in with full power the vibration is too much for the hard disk and it shuts it down to protect the drive. I tried to turn off the drop protection but is still shuts down. I am thinking of trying a SD card to record to next. What I'm wondering is if even though I tell it to record to the SD card, does the hard drive still operate in the back ground, which will cause it to shut down again? Curious if any has tried this.

Here is one that I am considering.

You can run both the camera and the monitor off a battery, or the 12V in the plane.

The camera is on when plugged in. Takes videos or pictures. Only takes the video when the monitor is on.

Sounds like it would do the job.

Figured I could mount the monitor on the yoke for easy control.

It's a make and offer deal. I offered $200.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

They countered at $239. Think I'll sleep on it. Wish someone knew something about this setup, or these people.

I'd pass. If it was that great, they wouldn't have to make such a huge ebay page about it.

So my cam came in the mail today http://www2.oregonscientific.com/shop/p ... 14&pid=943 and looks like it will work good, but I have never edited a video before. I don't savvy computers too much and could use some advise. When I put the video on my computer it is AVI, but I can also open it with QuickTime. Playing it in AVI I can't see any edit options, but in Qtime there are editing options if I buy "pro".

Anyone have experience with simple editing that could point me in the right direction.

thanks :!:

You need a dedicated non-linear video editing application that allows you to sequence video clips and edit their transitions, add music, titles etc. You can download Windows Movie Maker for free. Other more powerful apps includes Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere.

On my Mac I just use iMovieHD, and sometimes Final Cut Pro.

If you have a camcorder listed on Hoyt's website it should work with any external camera. These guys have a great set up especially the camera and lens cover. Good for 100 mph rocks and bugs.

Altitude is Time…. Airspeed is Life!

MTV - I've been looking at the Oregon Scientific models as well and had the same thought about the remote control. The ATC5K model says it comes with a remote (http://www2.oregonscientific.com/shop/p ... 14&pid=896). It looks like the models further down the product line don't.

Something to consider as I've been looking over the competing products is field of view. The Oregon Scientifics only have 48 deg. The GoPro Hero (http://www.goprocamera.com/index7.htm) has 170 deg FOV - I'm thinking that would really capture flying well. The downside is it doesn't come with a remote...

This company has interesting things; www.supercircuits.com, monitors, bullit cams, DVR's. Great prices too. Flash drives do not like vibration very well. If you were just looking for a camera to hang on the out side of your plane, I would suggest going to the hock shop, or ebay, there are many used small cameras, with remotes, and image stabilization. The old tape types do not have a problem with vibration, and have faster shutter speeds that will stop the prop blur. I have several bullit cams, they seem to have a slight problem with reproducing colors accurately as well as a slow shutter speed, but I can correct the colors with Adobe Primiere, but that is an added expense. Mainly if it falls off or gets hit with a rock, you are not out much. Cameras are like airplanes, there is always a trade off.

While aviation has made the world a smaller place, if you fall, it's still hard to miss!

I need to clarify, "used DIGITAL" camera. Most will not be able to ditigize analog footage, in order to input it into your computer.

Okay, once again (or perhaps as usual) I am confused. I thought that the new flash drive video recorders were LESS susceptable to vibration.

I thought that was one of their advantages over HDD or Mini CD recorders.

Not So??

Utahmaule,

So you attached the camera to the aft gear leg I take it. Is there a way to eliminate the prop blur? I was thinking of mounting outside the prop arc, but the disadvantage there is that you then have no airplane reference, which you do have with your setup, which I like.

Course, I'd probably step on the video camera as I got out of the plane....

I mounted it on the step. You'll notice as the gear leg is getting bounced around the camera is not moving with it. I like the reference of the tire and gear leg. Prop kinda sucks, but oh well. Fun to play with that's for sure.
