Water assisted landing... close call!

Yesterday I tried a couple water assisted landings in my 180. This was the first time I've done it in this airplane. I used to do it all the time with my 170. The 170 was over 300lbs lighter and had bigger tires, plus flew slower with the Sportsman Stol. So my 180 doesn't handle this technique quite as well, especially on 26" goodyears. On this landing I got a bit slow on the water before reaching the gravel bar. A shot of power and full up elevator saved the day. It was a bit close for comfort though!. At least I ended up with a cool picture and video.

Water assisted landing... close call!

I'd bet a 100$ that if you sent it to them the policy would not change.

Had this very conversation with two separate companies when shopping. They know very well this goes on but yet very few if any incidents are happening. The exact response was something like "policies are based on pilot time and in type". "As your time increases, add a rating or two and have no incidents your good to go."...and your price goes down over time.

People loose their insurance generally after their second incident if it costs big time. Your then out of insurance or "uninsurable" for 5 years.

I know this verbatim as I have been on both sides of it. I sent my carrier links to my blog, my fly-in, etc. They said, "please be careful".

No BS

I also pay close to 5500$ for two airplanes per year because, I am considered high risk.

My life insurance isn't cheap either but I was honest with them as to what I do.

We are playing hard and need to be up front with all. No need to hide it. Your gonna pay for it but when your toys are a 100 plus thousand dollars you need to be covered.

Re: Water assisted landing... close call!

From what I see that looks well executed and I would have though it went as planned if I was an observer.

My question is is there a concern of water ingestion in the intake system? Hydrolocking the engine?

I like how you wash your plane, Rob.

Re: Water assisted landing... close call!

Looked like it went well to me too. Good thing you reconized the excessive drag and compensated.
One thing I learned watching your video is how remarkably clear of water the air filter/intake opening stayed.
Even during a good sloshing the risk of hydrostatic shock is at a minimum.

Embedded in the op, but if you go to vimeo dot com slash 221293133 you'll see it there. Sorry but if I pasted the link to Vimeo it just kept embedding it here, figured maybe you can't see it for some reason.

Re: Water assisted landing... close call!

Really cool....and I admire from a distance. If I'm being perfectly honest with myself, I don't do things like that because:

1) I don't fly enough. The guys that pull this stuff off repeat ably fly a lot or they have already amassed a ton of experience. I've only been current enough in one plane in my flying life to have "the feel" that I imagine is needed to execute this. My first reaction when I see stuff like this is "COOL!!" Next, is "I admire the dedication and skill required to pull this off safely."

2) I'm cheap and I can't afford to fix my overpriced airplane.

Nice vid Rob, that got your heart pumping I bet.
I watched 2 planes flip in the water, both those guys are still playing on gravel bars.
I've learned if water is hitting the windshield it's time for power.

Pretty bawlsy! Well beyond my skill level.

Hmmm. I wonder if water erosion of the prop on such landings is an issue?

Great video. You are a much more precise pilot than I am! Does your seat have a pair of symmetrical, well worn twin half moon depressions gained with your obvious 'feel' for what the plane is doing?
