Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Good eyes SixTwo, that is indeed where they like to hang out, and they take special joy in snagging a Utah driver it seems, some about the Idaho state deficit!

Emflys: I am so happy with the 26"' Airstreaks I don't feel bad about not going bigger, until I see pictures like yours! BUT, when I took mine off temporarily for the ski install I was reminded that they weigh, coincidentally, 26 lbs ea., so there is a price to pay for sure.
FYI, to date I have not noticed any particular difficulty (grabbing etc) with landing on pavement in crosswinds, an urban myth perhaps? Of course I have only 3 or 4 pavement landings on them, but 3 had good crosswinds. Landing on snow is of course even cushier then the Bushwheels, literally hard to tell when you touch down sometimes, landing on pavement with the 6:00's a different story, the Airstreaks spoil a guy.

In that last photo, I think I can see the notch in the mountain next to I-15 where that insipid Idaho State Trooper hides and waits for me each Thanksgiving

If you see him down there, could you kindly ask him to lose the bravado and tell him those sunglasses are too big for his face!

Only then will you reach hero status here, CG, deadstick take-offs notwithstanding

Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew SNY to GXY to meet Tadpole for breakfast at the Barnstormer, but he did not make it. Had a lengthy discussion about Champs with Barnstormers co-owner Jim and then a short, low trip to FMM to see whatt was happnin' there. Back to SNY at 9,500 ft because anything lower was pretty rough. A good day to fly since I haven't been in the air since 3/25.

Hello Backcountry Pilots,
Got away from the phone, and yard work I should be doing and flew into the Salmon Bar Airstip located at the confluence of the Snake and Salmon River in Hells Canyon. The airstrip is 650 feet long, rough, narrow wth river at both ends, "priceless"!

We were excited to heli in Silverton — until we saw the bird. Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it. Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew around the area and scouted out some new strips in the area. Will have to plan some more time to stop in. It was nice to finally have some terrific weather to buzz around.

Re: Where did you fly today?

This was a “free style” pipeline day. There were two farm auctions near my route. So after checking out the inventory at the first one at 200 feet, I realized there was nothing I needed, so on I went.

Next I flew over Ralph Charles’ strip to see if the organ concert was still on. Pat didn’t come out of the house so I “trucked” on.

The second auction took a little while to find. I didn’t bring directions so I was winging it. The bad part was it was somewhere in a tower controlled airspace. I asked permission to do some “grid work”. On the third pass, I saw all the pickup trucks in a field, along with a row of yellow Minneapolis Moline tractors with hundreds of farmers standing around. Bingo!

I told the tower guy thank you, and that I was landing in a farm field. That was fine with him. I had to land in a rolling field of corn stalks, which worked out ok, since it was 50 yards from the tractors.

I was there for bargains and everything went high, but I had a nice three hour break from the flying grind. After that, I finished my West Virginia route down in God’s country.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Had a small group fly out yesterday. 3-C-180's and a Husky. Left DRO around 10:30, went around the south end of the LaPlatas, and over to Gateway for another great lunch. Left there, went up to check out Dolores point, and show it to my friend with the Husky. Video of the strip attached. A little snow and mud, but should be in fine shape in a couple weeks for the flyin.

Went on down the Dolores River to the Colo. River, to Moab, and on down to Caveman to see how things are shapeing up. Thingsare looking good.

Visited for a little while and left for home. Got done around 4:30. Pretty good day.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Patrolguy: nothing like combining work and fun! With my crane business I often "have to" fly into or over a site to first eyeball it before bringing the crane in. This sometimes leads to giving rides, etc. and for sure some free aerial pictures for whomever I'm working for. Not only is it of course an excuse to go flying, but it's damn good business, I really ought to put that extra service I offer in my crane Yellow Pages ad!

My 85 year old mother quit flying around 1951. Most of her time was in J3's. Today I gave her her first ride in a J3 in about 60 years. I told her if she was riding, she would have to start it!

One of these days when I have no need of a license and have a couple of years to waste as a guest of the government, I am gonna land on that sucker.
