Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

What do you think you're doing flying MY plane?? :)

Seriously, how many people name their plane Charlie? A lot I imagine.

Somebody has to fly it...

Mine sits around way too much...sometimes I wish I trusted someone enough to fly it just to keep the oil mixed up. Maybe I need to pm STC to see if he can send the guy that borrows his plane over :D :D

Re: Where did you fly today?

Well with a call sign of 343C it would seems silly to name it Gertrude

And yes I have run into lots of folks with a C that call thier bird Charlie

My buddy flew a plane 94 Papa, people would look at us funny when we talked about should we use Papa to haul a bunch of junk, or Charlie was too slow to go a long ways, #-o

Re: Where did you fly today?

It was time to get the M7 out and cook the moisture out of the oil, and keep rust from forming. So I did a little flight around Portland. This is downtown.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Chicken Strip Death Valley, Ca
We left 1C9 Frazier Lake at around 7:15 and a hour and forty minutes later we were on the ground in the middle of desolation. I can see why people come here every weekend and I'm sure during the week too. I can't wait to see the stars at night when we camp there. Chicken Strip is a short walk from the Saline Valley Warm Springs. This was just a fast scouting trip to check things out before I take my wife and daughter there so we left after walking around the springs for a bit.
We landed and took off with about 48 gallons on board and that seemed a little much if we were also loaded with minimal camping gear.
It's about 1400 feet long with a small uphill slope to land on. A few rollers but no ruts or potholes.
The walk to the hot springs took 5 minutes.
I really want to go back with my wife and kid to camp but we got knocked around pretty good on the eastern side of the Sierras while 6500 or above. She hates turbulence. I don't see a reliable way to know what the conditions are if we planned a trip. Pireps would help but I'd like to leave early and there would likely be very few in that area. Does anyone have any tranquilizers? (her idea)

I can't wait to go back.

Soza Mesa is just a few minutes from home and a great place to go for a Saturday morning hike.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Grand Gulch mine, Az. slight x wind from the west landed to the south. One of my 2 passengers thought it was rough, I thought it was kinda rough but not too bad. Walked around the ruins not too much to do or see there. Flew to Grand Canyon West (1G4) was informed that there is a landing fee, $100. Three options: take the tour $43 each and no fee, pay $100 and hang out and watch the tourists or option 3 leave now and pay nothing. No charge to use the toilet and promptly leave.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I flew around in circles at our home strip Saturday, completing the first flight of my Vans RV-8 that I have been building for the last couple years.

Funny how the same pattern can look different out of a new plane!!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Thanks for the congrats, I got dad and a buddy to take it for a spin today also. The phase one 40 hour deal is gonna get old. 25 mile radius with a plane that can go 200mph, and I am gonna know my home area real well. Dad went up in it, and said he will never have a better landing than his first one in the plane. He said he greased it on so nice, he knew it was gonna be downhill from there on out.

4.9 hours and slowly counting before passengers, or more than 25 miles away from home :D

Oh well, I guess I will have to fly it again tomorrow

Re: Where did you fly today?

I went chasing cutthroat trout on the Fraser River today with my 172. I flew east out of Langley (cynj) following the Fraser for 15 minutes to one of the gravel bars in the Chilliwack area. Fished for a couple of hrs. then headed to the resturaunt at the chilliwack airport for coffee and pie. Then back out to a couple more bars before going home. No camera,no fish , no worries what a day. I have been doing the bars for awhile but this is the first time i actually used the plane for fishing, and it was great. i will try and embed a couple of pictures of the aera from some earlier trips, if it doesn't work the pictures are in my gallery.

I flew a short and very rough 150 mile pipeline route at tree top level with 25 mph gusting winds. Deadheaded back at 7500 feet at 188 mph, then turned around180 degrees and parked at 7500 feet with 0 ground speed for about 5 minutes.

Ahhh Spring...good flying weather is upon us.

We are in the CA Gold/WIne country SE of Sacramento. So pretty and green out right now. Great flying weather. Dropped in on a sprawling cow pasture and pond.

Flying Season!!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Looking good Emmet! Nice and green, rub it in! You liking those 29's?

I flew a little over 3.5 hrs. today, got another whole bunch of snowfield landings, again.
80 miles north of my place, coming into Alpine Wyoming. The big flat snow covered ( :D ) area is the Palisades Res.
Image

Then I flew down the Star Valley and dropped in at the world headquarters of Aviat, makers of the Husky. And sure enough there was a gaggle of them there. Plus a bunch under construction inside.
Image

Then on the way home landed wherever the mood struck me, it's hard making any headway when you're landing every 2 minutes, the amount of available places to set down is so large with the skis it's mind boggling.
Image

The back side of the 9 K plus range I live on, the snow will be up high until June at least, and yes I do have some landing sites in mind up there.
Image

Back on the front side, right above my place. My runway was slightly muddy, almost all dried out, 2 days ago it was snow covered. The takeoff from this shot was ALMOST deadstick, 1400 prop RPM, gravity and slick snow did the rest. I have a couple sites picked out where a totally dead stick takeoff, on skis, will be a piece of cake, take that "taildraggingfun" (thanks for the idea!)
A total of 2 dirt/gravel, 2 paved, and a couple dozen or so snowfield landings and takeoff, and so far I have landed on the skis on pavement yet!

CG, you really ought to learn how to relax and have fun :P

In that last photo, I think I can see the notch in the mountain next to I-15 where that insipid Idaho State Trooper hides and waits for me each Thanksgiving

If you see him down there, could you kindly ask him to lose the bravado and tell him those sunglasses are too big for his face!

Only then will you reach hero status here, CG, deadstick take-offs notwithstanding

Re: Where did you fly today?

Great pics Tom. You are livin the dream!!

I love the 29's. They are really a little too heavy for the plane, and I think the 26" airstreaks are the better fit, but I couldn't pass up the price!! Can't really botch a landing either
