Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Flew in a cache of dog kibble, meat and fat for friends heading off on a long mushing trip. More overflow ice than normal in the region this winter- and a bit less snow.

Took advantage of the fact that one of our vehicles was parked at my Fairbanks A&P - flew up to town for a dentist appt. And shopping. Gotta love rural life :) Beautiful CAVU day with temps in the low teens.

Working a modified shift at work, which allowed me to fly before and after going in today. Flew out to Calhan in the morning, then went and found this elk herd this evening. Crappy cell phone pic

Re: Where did you fly today?

A perfect absolutely calm day here in Idaho, and I had to work. Work being flying 95 miles across the desert into the mountains to see a rancher (2nd trip out) about a big solar water pumping system he needs. A 1 hour flight again saved me a 2 1/2 hr drive, I was home by noon. As you can see we still have plenty of snow up high, good thing as my wheel skis are halfway here (from Quebec), on what must be the slowest damn freight line around, shipped the 12 th. come on already GET HERE!! I could have landed here today.....

Great day at the beach. We had 5 planes and 10 guys. Tom, Chad, Terry, Dave, Brian, Jamin, Jason, Shaun, Chads friend I'm at a loss and me. Sun light wind. Ate at Fat Freddy's diner. We had a good BS session. Brian came all the way from Bend.

OK everybody put your hands in your pockets. Guess which ones are government employees.

Flew down to spend the weekend in Talkeetna and watch the Oosik Classic Nordic race. Beautiful CAVU weather. Saw an interesting plane on the ramp, maybe some of you are familiar with it but I've never seen one before. Piper Cub Coupe, a side-by-side cub with (what I would assume without looking in the database or under the cowl is)a C90 engine.

Re: Where did you fly today?

After a long meeting at work I just needed some fresh air, so grabbed my lunch and by noon I was wheels up and headed for Gleason flats.
Image
Cut down some big bushes along the strip then a hike up the mountain just to enjoy the views above the Salt river.
Fantastic to see the desert this green.

Made it back to the plane after sunset and flew home in the dark, not a bad day afterall.

Re: Where did you fly today?

After an afternoon of errands, we flew a circuitous route back home from Fairbanks...watched sunset over the Tanana Flats and then flew up the Toklat River and back to INR by moonlight. Bumpy on the lee side of the range but better once we got down lower inside the canyons.

Re: Where did you fly today?

No pictures, but yesterday I flew the rental Citabria up to Greeley to see a guy's Pacer. I'd never really seen one up close and got to sit in one...and it's the plane at the top of my list for purchasing. So he let me try it on and stuff. No flying it, as the left gear is not aligned right so it's squirrely as hell.

Then I flew back to Denver, was pretty turbulent too...and my Ipod broke so I was bored for the last 20 minutes.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Tadpole,

Maybe that was my old plane? I bought a 180 hp pacer down in south Texas once that had the mains toeing out big time. On those small paved runways with a crown in them, you wanted both wheels to go down together.

After getting it home, I kept it on grass until I sold it with the same "squirrelly" warning to him.

Re: Where did you fly today?

A lot of Pacers and esp converted TriPacers seem to have misaligned gear. In the case of the conversions, it may be that the gear fittings were welded on the fuselage in a not-quite-right location. When the wheel alignment is right on, and the tailwheel is squared away (another common problem), they track straight as a string-- if not, they can be pretty darn squirrelly.
Unfortunately there's no easy fix, like a Cessna has with the tapered axle shims. It's a matter of re-welding the fittings, and/or tweaking the gear legs into alignment by applying some elbow grease to the axle via about a 10' long cheater bar. Warning- it's not for the faint of heart. You can do a search on the shortwing piper.org site about this.
