Coming back this morning from breakfast in Alpine, I noticed a rider-less horse, saddled and dragging his reins, trotting down the dirt road on the east edge of the Blackfoot Res. That didn't seem right so I started eyeballing the area, and spotted a sheep camp a mile away, and went over to see that no one was there. In the meantime some pickups came down the road from the north, and the horse was now off the road headed toward the shoreline, and the pickups kept going like they wern't looking for a horse.
Just then some movement in the brush caught my eye, a sheep dog, no, two of them, and behind them a sheepherder. Around here that means a Peruvian and NO English, nice guys though. He was making tracks toward the horse, who was continuing in the opposite direction. So, I dropped down on the deck and from 180 degrees away proceeded to fly towards the horse, thinking of course it would shy away in the opposite direction towards the sheepherder. Wrong, this ignorant beast just picked up speed and didn't change directions at all! One more time, on a very shallow angle, I tried to make it more attractive for the nag to head anywhere but the direction he was heading: towards me and away from the sheepherder. This had the same result as the first time, no effect but increased speed the wrong direction. This was totally counter to many other times I've herded sheep and cattle on friend's ranchs: don't scare them, give them some room, just a little nudge is all it takes usually.
I gave up, flew back towards the herder, who I now saw had also gave it up and was headed back to his camp, along with the dogs. I waggled my wings and waved out the window as if to say "what are you gonna do, stupid horse, hey I tried", he waved and all three of us, 5 counting the dogs, headed out in three different directions. One of those priceless little adventures in a small airplane
