Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

He'll be the guy with the hat with the big P embroidered on it.

Kidding aside, I felt I was ready and sufficiently stupid enough to try it.

No birds were killed in the attempt.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Coming back this morning from breakfast in Alpine, I noticed a rider-less horse, saddled and dragging his reins, trotting down the dirt road on the east edge of the Blackfoot Res. That didn't seem right so I started eyeballing the area, and spotted a sheep camp a mile away, and went over to see that no one was there. In the meantime some pickups came down the road from the north, and the horse was now off the road headed toward the shoreline, and the pickups kept going like they wern't looking for a horse.

Just then some movement in the brush caught my eye, a sheep dog, no, two of them, and behind them a sheepherder. Around here that means a Peruvian and NO English, nice guys though. He was making tracks toward the horse, who was continuing in the opposite direction. So, I dropped down on the deck and from 180 degrees away proceeded to fly towards the horse, thinking of course it would shy away in the opposite direction towards the sheepherder. Wrong, this ignorant beast just picked up speed and didn't change directions at all! One more time, on a very shallow angle, I tried to make it more attractive for the nag to head anywhere but the direction he was heading: towards me and away from the sheepherder. This had the same result as the first time, no effect but increased speed the wrong direction. This was totally counter to many other times I've herded sheep and cattle on friend's ranchs: don't scare them, give them some room, just a little nudge is all it takes usually.

I gave up, flew back towards the herder, who I now saw had also gave it up and was headed back to his camp, along with the dogs. I waggled my wings and waved out the window as if to say "what are you gonna do, stupid horse, hey I tried", he waved and all three of us, 5 counting the dogs, headed out in three different directions. One of those priceless little adventures in a small airplane #-o

Hit (literally) Buzzlatka's Delta International Strip today. Screwed up my landing thinking I needed to get down really short and managed a hellaceous bounce - Good thing that Skywagon gear are really tough! It isn't as short as it looks. Definitely a challenging strip for my skill level!

Greatest feeling ever. Congratulations.

Did anyone cut off your tail feathers? I remember when I started to suspect my instructor was going to solo me... I started wearing my shittiest t-shirts to the airport. :)

Zane - if it wasn't for the BCP shirt and tough jacket, I would have blood to show. My first skate boarding adventure by the way.

Hey McKim! We were all there once..nothing like kicking that noisey instructor out of the plane and finding your wings! Plane flys a little differently without that extra baggage...HUH?

This was shot about a month ago on a particularly fun day... finally had a free minute to play around with the footage. Music is hand-picked for Flightlogic. :)

Yes, although I kinda had to ask my CFI to do it. He kind of had a "uh, well, you sure? I mean, it's a perfectly good shirt" attitude. Heck, I specifically wore an old dress shirt that I never wear anymore because the collar is too small! (I rarely wear dress shirts without a necktie.) I think it's because I'm his first soloed student. I wanted the souvenir. :) We pretty much planned on me soloing yesterday unless I really messed something up. Saturday's practice was in pretty decent cross & gusty wind and that went quite well (actually had my best landing yet that afternoon). Sunday was great in comparison. :)

I'll get his signature at my next dual lesson since we ran out of time before we had to get back to town for church.

No kidding! I am already pretty self-critical (I get paid to assess my group's performance at my day job), so at this point I don't really need a running commentary of what I could have done better after I've already processed the exact same thing in my head. ;) I probably would have noticed a bigger performance difference if we hadn't topped off the tanks that morning... Weight of full tanks ≈ weight of instructor :P

It didn't really hit me until I was in the takeoff climb getting ready to turn crosswind. Normally, he's talking at that point and I'm trying to make a radio call. This time I just looked over to my right, saw the empty seat, and made the radio call. :)
