Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Well today was a great day. Was out ditching a field for drainage and this Maule starts doing stop and goes on the airstrip right beside me. So I go say hi and turns out the guy is just learning on his new plane, a 2000 M7 with a IO-540. Very nice airplane. He and his instructor were planning on going to find some sandbars to land on. So being a friendly local that would rather fly then work, I offered my services as a guide. They flew me to my Citabria which was parked at my strip about 6 miles away and took off and flew the river, a mile from my strip. We landed 3 different sandbars together, and I landed 3 more by myself, as they didn't feel comfortable landing on the shorter ones yet. Great guys, nice plane, and beautiful day for flying.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Cool story, sounds like fun. The flights that are spontaneous can be very rewarding.

That looked like a pretty sweet Maule. Didn't get as good a look at your Citabria, but sounds like a good time had by all.

That has to be some kind of a record! :) The original post more than makes up for it.

That is one nice looking Maule, I bet it got up & out quickly with the 260HP engine?? Shame about the incy-wincy prop... How did it look getting airborne David?

It just goes to show it's all the pilot, with you're Citabria outdoing them 2 to 1! :D

Hahaha. Bad record I think. It did pretty good. with half tanks and solo he was off of the grass in 350 feet. Not as short as the Citabria, but hes a fair bit heavier with that Maule. Pretty nice plane though, but just having a hard time picturing myself in a Maule.
Heres a couple pics of the Citabria.

Re: Where did you fly today?

This is a part of my flight home from Sydney to the Far North Coast of New South Wales about 400nm. Had a beautiful day for flying and had a grin on my face from ear to ear. The Maule is now at my home field, soooo I think I'll go for a fly without having to catch trains, planes and automobiles to get to her, just short motorbike ride.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Started my new job teaching tailwheel in Bellingham, WA. So nice to be back in a TW aircraft after a whole summer in tricycle gear. Flew the the Lowe converted C-150 over to Orcas Island for a few landings and then back to B'ham for 12 more. The Lowe conversion likes wheel landings and hard braking with the tail flying is a joy. I was like a junkie getting his fix.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Fun day for me yesterday. Short flight- Gallup, NM to Gallup, NM. Hopped into the Caravan to fly it back east. Right after takeoff, exiting downwind, torque stated down. So I pushed up the power and reached over to check the friction, noticed prop RPM was down a bit, pushed the prop up, but it was at the stop, where it should have been. Hmmm, cycled the prop and it went to min RPM, bummer. Well luckily I looked over my shoulder and Gallup was still in gliding distance. I was a bit high, so I pulled the power back to not over shoot and seems to be going well. Half way down I did a power check, and now I had 800 rpm on the prop, essentially, no power. Made the field fine, no beta on roll out, taxied it in with very little power left.

Bad govornor, 5 hrs out of the box! Well, for the consideration of $1,200 Rocky Mountain sent me a replacement. I'll put it in tomorrow and try again.

Nice thing about the Caravan it can really glide, but if it had happened a couple of minutes later, I would have landed on the highway, glide or no glide. Amazingly it will do 30 miles from 10,000'. First governor I have ever in 35 years fail on a PT-6, especially in that way, usually they cycle or just not hold, not make RPM, go over RPM, but just continuing to lose RPM is not the usual failure. Think one of the internal seals failed and it started pressurizing both sides of the valve.

Moral, make a decision to abort quickly, and accept nothing, thinking it will get better, it doesn't.

Caravan counts as big iron in my little world, making it all the more impressive that you got 'er back on the ground without bending anything.

Sounds like you did everything right, and glad it turned out as well as it did.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Eric,

I did quit working in Port T. I am working in B'ham now. The plane belongs to the company not me. I'm still shopping for a plane. I like this C150tw ok but the tailwheel steering isn't very effective. Good that it is easy to handle with the tail off the ground.

I'll probably take it over to PT later in the month to visit.
