Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Early Oct. flight into the Colorado high country to check out the color changes.
One of those glorious clear, calm, cool fall days.
Is this a great country or what?

Thanks, S-12. Some of that scenery is just jaw-dropping. If I lived down there, I'd be wanting to make videos every day!

Our colors are a little behind yours. I went out today for a little peek and, despite the terribly flat light, managed to find a little color here and there.

This one doesn't have any color, but the ridge in the foreground is the resting place for two souls on their family place.

We should all be so lucky as to rest so well.

Again, iPhone pics, so not the best but not terrible.

The vis was so good you could see McKinley from just off FAI! The pic doesn't do it justice.

Hey, I recognize the strut in a couple of those pics. Gonna have to put another hour on it this weekend to do an oil change before NTC. Shoot me a text if you're free.

Spent a couple days helping some ranchers keep their lambs from getting eaten and mashed some quick videos together in the process.

"Open range"--how it feels to fly in Wyoming.

Where did you fly today?

Saturday morning up Provo Canyon and along the East side of the Wasatch mans. We had a little snow storm the night before so the contrast between the colors and the white snow was spectacular. Turn off the music if you want to.

Re: Where did you fly today?

This time I had the camera mounted out past the strut on a mount I made myself that I'm experimenting with that attaches to an inspection plate. Usually I use a really cool mount from Marc Webster that attaches to the strut. It's the best made, easiest to use mount I've seen. Unfortunately, Zane has it right now! (Have you tried it out yet, Zane?)

Re: Where did you fly today?

Screwing around the other day, landed on the beach at McGrath. I knew it would be firm enough but underestimated the drag for takeoff. I ended up aborting the first takeoff and had to let a bunch of air out of the tires. If that wasn't going to work I would have had to leave it there until a frosty morning and do the walk of shame back to the airport. I got her airborne the second time by using a trick I learned by accident in the 206, finding the "sweet spot" and letting the nosewheel carry it's fair share rather than keeping the nose up and digging the mains in early in the takeoff roll. I got it out of my system and won't be trying that again!

Re: Where did you fly today?

It occurred to me that I had not been out to the coast since '97, so I flew direct to Florence Or. and hung a right. It took well over an hour to get to Pacific City, where I intended to spend the night, as I was playing tourist and flying slow as possible. The feeling of that thick sea level air was as I remembered, nothing like it! As one who used to live on the coast (Big Sur/Carmel area) , I just have to see it and fly it every now and then, as much as I like the mountain life.

I was a good boy and DID NOT fly too low or make any beach landings, I was unsure of the current regs on all that so I was content to just enjoy the view, besides they were simply too many people out enjoying the day, people with cell phone cameras  Once flying that 80 some mile stretch, my mission was complete, I had scratched that coast flying itch. Now I just had to find a place to crash, by that I mean a place to spend the night. After landing at PC, true to his word OregonMaule Rob, (I had sent him a totally unexpected text message a few hours earlier, a cryptic: "headed to PC, CourierGuy) met me at the strip and once he realized I was a cheap bastard, much too cheap to stay in a motel, offered to put me up in his under construction house. This was right up my alley, as one who has camped in construction sites many times. He was a great host, and like his giant camp fires at JC, the next morning while drinking coffee he fired up a propane space heater to take the chill off, the man knows how to create heat, and quickly! After breakfast at a great local place, and also hitting the local gas station I was outa there. The weather was due to change and work called, and I had spent a restless night when I heard the wind come up. All night I was sure I was screwed, and much to my surprise the first thing Rob said that morning was the east wind that was giving my fits was a good sign! Now that it was light I could see the blue sky, so I realized I was not going to need to cancel the next few crane jobs, have a neighbor feed the dog, max out the credit card etc. etc. Other then some VFR on top for 45 minutes or so it was smooth sailing back home. I cut it a bit close though on daylight, as in 10 minutes after landing on my narrow mountain strip it was DARK, the sun really sets fast this time of year, fast and early. #-o 17.3 hrs in 2 days, all for that 1.5 hr of coast flying, makes sense to me =D>

A fellow S-7 pilot's strip on the Snake River. He wasn't home, he was out flying!Image I'm not sure what this is, but I don't believe it will ever get off the ground. If not a new kind of heavy lift rotorcraft, I guess it's a series of cooling towers, cooling WHAT is the question.....anybody? It was halfway between Creswell and Florence.Image Thanks again Rob =D>

Re: Where did you fly today?

I flew to the Spiral Jetty airstrip on the north shore of the Great Salt Lake, UT today to check the condition of the strip. It's quite rutted, but doable. There is a hole about 6 inches deep and across most of the width of the strip about 1/3 of the way from the east end. It looks like some large equipment turned around hard on the strip by locking the brakes on one wheel. Land a little long (past the hole) if you land there.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Great pictures SKALYWAG! I especially like the one with the two Texan girls sporting their cowboy boots and long-arms. How often do you have to polish your plane to keep it shiny?

BORN2FLYAK, what size tires are you using and did you need a 337?

Re: Where did you fly today?

So mine isn't as shinny as Skalywags but after 33 years of sitting in the back of a hangar and 2 years of major work and renovation my 180 is finally back in the air. On this one you can't judge a book by its cover... it looks like a million bucks (feels like I spent that much too) under the cowling with the new Pponk O470-50 and the interior was completely stripped and repainted with new upholstery and panel and just about everything else. Paint will be coming sometime in the next year or so... having too much fun spending the money on 100LL.

This is somewhere clear out west in Utah.

I have 8.50x6s all the way around, it's got the Landes fork STC. Works great, though having the 8.50 on the nose as well requires carrying a little power into the touchdown to keep the nose off.
