Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

OK, now I am curious. How did you get what looks like a "straight floats" airplane off the dock nod into the water? I'm probably missing something obvious, but that's a "foreign world" to me...

That is a neat shot. Reminiscent of airplane spotter playing cards. Thanks for all the great eye candy you consistently share.

The "dock" in this case is a boat lift, goes up and down

Looking good. Do you ever get all the way up river to Fabens on cotton? My vegetable growers would give me some cotton but mostly big airplanes came from down river.

Hey Contact, no I've never been in the Fabens area, other than flying past it on XC trips. Based outta North TX now. Mostly cotton and corn work around here.

Flew up to the divide to buzz around the Indian Peaks Wilderness yesterday morning. Beautiful and calm early morning air at 13k.

Last night I had a couple of hours to escape and get to the airport. I didn't have much daylight so I just did some touch and goes. I decided to focus on wheel landings, something I only muddled through in my endorsement years ago and have avoided since if able.

I managed seven touch and goes where my tail wheel never touched the ground. Because they weren't full stops I can't count them for currency but I don't need them either. I am going to say it sure made me more proficient in doing them.

For this practice I set power to 1400 rpm abeam the numbers and varied my glide to avoid power changes. They turned out to be some of the better landings I've made in the plane yet.

On the last one I decided to add power and try this hover taxi thing that Contact talks about. So I got down into the tail low position and added enough power to carry me down the runway to a much later turn off (closer to parking anyway).

When the Citabria gets into ground effect you can really slow it down. Wow, it really did feel like hovering in the 9 knot headwind I had. I was surprised at the control effectiveness and kept moving the flippers like it should be mushing badly and kept over controlling a bit as a result. It was obvious I had more reserve buoyancy than I expected.

It was fun. The pic above was at the gas pumps where I put 11 gallons in my tanks to cover the pattern work and my trip to PAE over the weekend to see the Mosquito fly.

To each their own, but personally I prefer maintaining a constant glide slope, and adjusting the power to do so.
Re wheel landings, Bill White of insurance fame wrote an article years ago about wheel landings in a Skywagon.
However the technique(s) are applicable to any airplane. He has since "refined" the article and/or technique, which is unfortunate since I think the original article was better. Here's a link to the current version on his website.

Oshkosh to Faribault, MN, to Mobridge, SD, to Baker, MT. 8.75 hours in a Cub.

Home tomorrow....hopefully.
