AH64,

We send them out to pick berries in the fall 8) .

Some of them come back.

Frankly, its them snakes and big lizard things that scare the crap outta me. I'd be packin heat if I was to walk through those southern swamps.

I would much rather deal with bear, elk, moose or even an elephant than thousands of deadly snakes per square inch, dinosaurs that can eat you without warning and swamps than could suck up a cruise ship without a trace.

Yeah, bears may take a large round to stop them, but the likelihood that I will actually ever have to shoot one is remote. However if I were to go stomping around in a swamp, or even swimming in a pool in some areas, the likelihood that I would become an alligator snack is actually much higher. And don't even get me started about snake bites, cottonmouth, rattlers, corral (sp?) yeah I'll take the bear problem any day over the other alternatives.

We were discussing rounds for emergency self defense, not hunting so the ethics of wounding an animal is not my greatest concern. At the speed bears travel you will never get more than one or at most two shots before he hits you. You are not in danger unless closer than say 30 feet and that ain't but two jumps! An once and an eighth or more of heavy shot, three inches from the muzzle will break the spine or shoulders but I wouldn't quibble if you want to carry slugs either. I have several friends with funny looking marks on their hide that would have been damn glad for either one as they were packing rifles when hit. By the way, one of the worst bear attacks in recent history was a 150 lb female black bear. I also agree that a cow moose is more likely to spoil your day than a bear anyway. A freind of mine from Australia got home after hiking around up here in the dard after bears and said " I would rather have a Teipan on a leash than go back after bears with you" but that's just plain nuts, you can al least see or hear a bear coming after you!!!!

Quote; I know of NOBODY that's ever killed a charging bear with a handgun, though I suppose it could be done. I'd like to meet the guy who did it though.

I can't believe this remark. I use a 454 casul

Where's the article showing pics of a lady in AK, Did a griz in at close range while outside the cabin hanging laundry. there has to be many..

Tony Turinsky knows the best bear gun. It is one of those lightweight S&W .22 revolvers. When attacked by a bear, you use it to quickly shoot your hiking partner in the leg.

Trust me, guys, if you have a gun in your hands, and you are reasonably proficient with it, you won't have the slightest problem getting it into position and shooting it if a bear charges you. There are motivations, and there are motivations.

Shoot to practice, so that when it hits the fan, you can shoot for real.

Speaking of motivations....this is what I prefer to use on those camping trips in bear country.

I'm betting she's reasonably proficient, whether or not she can make the shotgun shoot is another story.

That reminds me, is anyone going to Playa this year?

What's PLaya? Is she gonna be there? I think she needs a new pair of jeans, cuz the ones she's wearing are pretty torn up.

Seems to me you guys are trying to shoot the only legal way to dispose of tree hugging kalifornicators. Next time you go to bear country, offer a free flight to a tree hugger, fill his pockets with granola and send him out on the point.
