Re: Is this how the Madness starts

Let me throw yet another wrinkle into everything. Several years ago, when I'd practically fallen out of the airplane in front of my hangar after fighting a headwind all the way from OSH that made it almost 10 flight hours, I decided that whomever padded Cessna seats (mine's an articulated out of a newer airplane) had really missed the boat on comfort. I sent the whole seat off to Oregon Aero for their full comfort package, except keeping the covering so it would match the rest of the upholstery--and it was in good shape.

When it came back, the difference in comfort is absolutely magnificent. Long days are not an issue any more. When I first sit in it, especially in the winter, it's like sitting on concrete, but it gradually conforms to my butt, and it is SOOOOOO comfortable!

On the roll pins, I just replaced those last week--and yeah, they had all broken over a period of time, probably due to a combination of passengers and me abusing them. Not a big deal, but I'll be more careful to protect them in the future.

Re: Is this how the Madness starts

@cary - yep I'm going the comfort foam route as well. Removing the metal springs and getting cenconite "bladder", with the new foam and covered in leather. Costing a grip... But what the hell couple weeks of working over time and I'll have a great set of seats for the next 20 years.

Re: 182 Interior Madness

So while I'm waiting for my seats to get done... I've had some time to expand the project beyond my original intent. Its kind of like a scab, you can't stop picking at it.. This was suppose to be just pilot and co-pilot seat reupholstered, but that has grown to getting completely different seats, then I decided to remove the carpet and replace with vinyl DOT flooring which also means painting the floor. So today I went down to remove the carpet and once I got started I could not stop and ended up removing the side panels as well (Selkirk).

Started out like this:

So again I was just going to remove the carpet, but ended up removing some panels as well

I didn't put that silver bubble wrap stuff in, it was already behind the Selkirk panels... yes its glued on with some black stuff.. and not just a bead it pretty much covers the panels. So If I decide to remove it there will be ALOT of work removing the old glue. I'm going to put the Selkirk panels back after I paint the floor and put in the new dot flooring. The question is, do I remove that silver stuff, remove the glue and then prime and paint when I do the floor, then add the black closed cell foam for insulation/sound barrier then put the Selkirk panels back.... or do I just paint the floor and leave the silver pop stuff and put the panels back on and go flying... I already know the answer, there is no way my OCD is going to let me keep that silver pop wrapping, but its a sh!t load of glue I'm gonna have to remove.

Welcome to the madness. :)

I have no helpful advice, but I will say I know exactly what you're going though having BTDT.

If you're just putting the fiberglass Selkirk panels back in then I wouldn't worry about taking that silver bubble wrap out. You will save yourself a lot of misery.

Re: 182 Interior Madness

I'm starting to agree with you all on the removal of the silver bubble stuff... it would be a major PITA, and I will be covering them back up with the Selkirk panels, I think I'm just going to leave them. Soooo back to just prepping the floor for paint, just a couple spots of glue, going to go down and pick up some MEK, also I have heard the use of Scotch Brite pads, are we talking the green scotch brite pads, or is there an industrial version that people are using for this?

Re: 182 Interior Madness

Good luck finding MEK in California. I ended up using acetone instead. Most of the scotch bright pads I used were the gray ones and they worked alright.

Re: 182 Interior Madness

In all my years of removing "glue" I've never found anything more effective than 3M adhesive remover, you can get it at NAPA. Squirt some on, let it set a spell, rub off with white, red, green, or grey scotch-brite.

Works better than lacquer thinner, toluene, acetone, mineral spirits, expletives, whatever....

That is the best stuff to use. Can't get it in CA. But a racing team I worked for would buy a few cases of it every year we went to Daytina Beach, FL for our first race of the year.

Re: 182 Interior Madness

Im really jealous of your open hanger door doing a suck A stinky job at night. That crap on the tunnel must be factory because my 182 had that same greenish gunk possibly foam from 50+ years ago.

I'd recommend the Maroon Scotch Brite pads if you plan on priming/painting. My hangar is on Lima row, but won't be out until later this week if you want to try some out.

Re: 182 Interior Madness

Well I can say that I have a new found respect for you guys that completely stripped your interior. Wow... talk about a mind numbing job.. and not just from the fumes. I spent most of my holiday time stripping the floor and moving into the new hanger. The floorboard is good enough for prime, paint, Skandia foam, Aerodot vinyl.

and also the new hangar, the wing height is a tight fit because the previous tenant laid down about 4 inches of new asphalt (to help with water back filling into the hangar).

Re: 182 Interior Madness

I had to rush this a little faster then I wanted to, only had access to a big hanger with sprayer for a few days. I still have a couple screws here and there that need to be added to a couple pieces of molding, but overall the interior is primed and painted and I laid down the new vinyl flooring. My seats are being done now and I should have them ready to install in a couple weeks. The next project down the road will be the panel, replacing it with a new aluminum face... but for now I just want to fly the damn thing.

EDIT: Hmmm I don't know why they are turned that way... but anyway

Re: 182 Interior Madness

Looks great! Are you going to put Selkirk 1/4" foam in the extended baggage area?

Re: 182 Interior Madness

Its a good idea for noise... I also put it behind the baggage bulkhead.

Looking good!
