As a flight instructor, I've put enough certified instrument pilots under the hood on needle ball and airspeed and the failure rate in that mode is pretty high. For someone who's never flown IFR much at all, or isn't rated, it's a real trial to keep one upright with one of those instruments, it seems.
I WOULD, however, install one of these: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/i ... key=365437 high on the panel in front of the pilot. Trust me, they help, and the 170 isn't the most stable airplane in yaw ever flown.
But, if I were doing a 170 panel today, I'd install a Garmin G-5 if I could afford it. http://www.chiefaircraft.com/avionics/g ... aQodgK8AUQ If I couldn't afford it, I'd make a hole in the panel for it, and cover it till I could afford one.
But, the passengers in that airplane will appreciate a slip/skid ball at the very least.
