Sounds like a great project. Obviously you know what you are doing if you are planning on stripping off the paint yourself. Seen stories of guys ruin airplanes not knowing really what they were doing. Best of luck with your project.

Re: 1962 Cessna 150TD

I also had good results with Stewarts EkoStrip. Be careful around your windows. It’s best to remove them if possible, but if not, try using aluminum foil and aluminum tape outside AND inside. That stuff will travel. Also follow up with a pressure washer, wash with mild soap and then pressure washer rinse again. My .02. YMMV.

Nice looking bird, looks like a lot of fun.

Re: 1962 Cessna 150TD

I had a stripping question for those who have done it before (were talking paint, not making college money...) How do you get all the paint out from around the rivet heads? Will a brass wire brush or brass wire wheel in a dremel work? Or will that be too damaging to the aluminum? The scotchbrite works, but takes forever. Thanks!

Re: 1962 Cessna 150TD

Use extra stripper on the tough spots and be patient. Try using the corner of the plastic scraper, but do NOT use any wire brush of ANY kind. You will never get the scratches to polish out. Pressure washer is your friend, also.

Re: 1962 Cessna 150TD

Typically 2024T3 is “Clad” (or “Alclad”) which is a coating of pure soft aluminum. Using mechanical extraction for paint, such as a wire brush, will damage the coating.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_aluminium_alloy

2024 aluminium alloy is an aluminium alloy, with copper as the primary alloying element. It is used in applications requiring high strength to weight ratio, as well as good fatigue resistance. It is weldable only through friction welding, and has average machinability. Due to poor corrosion resistance, it is often clad with aluminium or Al-1Zn for protection, although this may reduce the fatigue strength.[1][2] In older systems of terminology, 2XXX series alloys were known as duralumin, and this alloy was named 24ST.

2024 is commonly extruded, and also available in alclad sheet and plate forms. It is not commonly forged (the related 2014 aluminium alloy is, though).[3]

Well, I cant seem to make anything take this paint off of the rivet heads... any other suggestions before I have to go buy a pressure washer? #-o

Strip it the best you can, take it to a good paint shop, abandon your plans to polish the airplane and paint it. I’m kinda joking and kinda serious. As you know, it takes an incredible amount of work to take a once painted airplane and turn her into a polished beauty. And you just may tire of the constant polishing and work it takes to keep it that way. A nice well thought out simple classic paint scheme can really look sharp. Just something to consider.

haha not the worst advice to be honest..... considering painting the areas i was going to polish with a nice silver flake metallic paint instead. Its going to all depend on how well i can make these rivet heads look. If I cant figure it out and get it looking good, ill just paint it. Luckily, I have a compressor and a paint gun. I can paint semi-decently, just need to finish stripping and see how worn out i am!

Switching between that and aircraft stripper (from Napa autoparts). Each type of stripper has a different effect on different layers and colors of paint. I have no clue what this plane was painted with, but its damn near bullet proof

Thanks. I'm planning to strip my 206 this summer. It only has one coat on it, and I'm quote sure it's not original. Hoping it comes off easy as it's peeling and shiny underneath in a few places.
