Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Got the new tires mounted today but have yet to fly with them. They look good and are light weight and fairly soft. Usually when I push the plane in the hanger it stops pretty abruptly when it hits the chocks but the new Desser's almost rolled right over the top of them with the same air pressure as I had in the old tires, 10 lbs.

Weights of the bare tires:
Old Desser 21" 800-6..................10 3/4 lbs each
New Desser 22" 850-6 Tundra.......9 lbs each

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

You can call and ask, but when I spoke to them about a month ago they were saying July time frame. The unfortunate part is that the larger tires are for the bigger rims. John Mcbean did post on the KF forum that there is another manufacturer that is developing a larger tire (26" and 31") that are supposedly going to be "more" like the AK bushwheels and fit the 6" wheel. No timeline yet, though he did say they have been in the works for about a year.

I too pre ordered these 22"s and was a little disappointed. It seems like ABW is one of the few out there actually making their tires to the size they claim. My tires only came out to just under 21" with no load fully inflated on the rims. But for what they are and the price, I'm not too disappointed in them at all.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Just spent the day smashing my new 22" Desser tires into every gravel bar I could find. I can feel a noticeable difference from my 8.00x6's, and each side is even a 1lb lighter... I like em a lot, but I have nothing to compare em to. 8)

I let 10psi out of my 8.00s last weekend - I could feel a little difference straight away. More traction and cushioning.

What pressure are you running Choss? IIRC, the 22" use a tube, right?

I was running 7.5 since I am so light, and yes with a tube.

Working on it, my phone is not a smart phone... so I'm trying to figure out how to get the lame pictures I took, on to my comp!

Oh man and too bad I didn't have my gopro on, all I can say is there was a young topless chick in a kayak following me down the river. I shit you not! It must be summer time in a college town or something. I need to make low passes in both directions now to make sure I don't scare the hot chicks topless sunbathing on the other side of the river.

Here they are in action.

This spot was a little tight, had to shut her down and turn around by hand to get back in the air :)

This is clearly a job which is easier with two people, Choss. Surprised said kayaker didn't volunteer!
Good chance for a photo too [-X

Choss,

What's your empty weight with fuel? I'm at ~900 and running 14 PSI right now. Will probably go down to 12 and give it a try this weekend.

hehe thanks... yeah that one was prolly 10'x90', probably my smallest sliver of gravel yet, but I only had 2.5 gal in the tanks and sweet new tires so it seemed like the right thing to do. And I did manage to turn the plane around with out getting my feet wet while I waited for the topless kayak babe 8)

The beauty of Corvallis is that gravel bar and many others are only three miles off the approach end of the runway, so I can play around super light on fuel. The Willamette River is a dream for interesting landing spots! It might not be the Frank Church, but I can drive 10 min from my house to the airport then fly 3 min from the airport and be on a gravel bar in the middle of a river. There are lots of bars your Cub would like!

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Has anyone heard anything about the projected issue date of the 27" tires? I sent Dresser an email with an inquiry but haven't heard back.

I'm wondering the same about the certified tires. Originally they were due out in September. Likely the FAA holding up the certification process again.
