Try sending it to Desser, and see if that helps..... :D

The guys at Desser told me that the 27" tire will come out first quarter of 2015. They only fit 8" wheels.

They have had that data out since they released that they would be coming out with this tire.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

I agree that it is strange that they selected an 8" wheel for these tires. There are a lot of older Kitfoxes and other small planes that were built with 8" wheels and maybe that is their expected market. These guys are mostly running a Nanco ATV type tire.
I had spoke with the DESSER rep at Oshkosh and he told me these new tires would be availabe by now hence my question. But like anything in aviation, projected arrival dates are oftimes quite optomistic. ;)

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Maybe they want to be certain that nobody runs them on a certified airplane?

8 inch wheels do seem a little odd.

As to certification, it's a long and bumpy road.....

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

What's weird is that they told me back in April that the plan was to STC the big tires for the 180. I highly doubt they're planning on an STC for 8" wheels, so I'm guessing they misspoke.

I'll just keep putting my extra pennies in the BushWheel jar...

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Making a larger tire available only for 8" wheels would be a monumental marketing mistake on their part. Ouch.

I don't think they misspoke. The tire will be 27 x 10-8 for 8 inch wheel. That's the info I got from Desser when inquiring about their tires. The 31" tire will be for 10" wheels. Maybe they target the homebuilt/LSA market using the 8" Matco wheel.

Lucky they are getting into off-road tires then!

I agree that 8" wheels seems like a blunder. I would love to ring Dresser and find out why they decided that, except I can't find Dresser's phone number...

Seriously though, I guess there could be some engineering challenges. A fixed hub size means the tire side-wall gets progressively larger as the tires go up in size.

The Desser smooth 850-6 tires are now TSOed! Looks like the right tire for my 170. And they cost less than the Goodyear 850. Bushwheels would be great but they are out of my price range.

How are they holding up for you guys that bought the experimental/LSA version? Would you buy another set when they wear out?

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Ours are holding up great...that is to say they are holding up the airplane sitting in the hangar.[emoji1]

Honestly, only have 10 or so landings on them. They seem well constructed. Time will tell.

Why 8" wheels? There isn't enough market to overcome tooling cost to build them in 6".

Are the TSO'd tires available? I just checked the Desser website & it looks to me like they're still just promising late Feb shipping. And I would check the weight rating before ordering them when they do become available-- the ones they sell now are rated for 1600#, your 170 grosses at 2200.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Years ago when I was a kid in Washington we had "soft Field tires" on our Ag-Cats and cubs. Light thin skinned tires that were meant to be off pavement tires only . We had a grass /dirt strip alongside main paved runway to keep from wearing them out . Don't think 4 ply is heavy enough to be much good except on ultralights or LSA. I'll wait for the certified version capable of working on 180-185 size airplane -800x6 is ideal now. 850's are another option .

I'm guessing he will probably put 2 of them on his 170.

Since occasionally we land on just one wheel (think a wing-low wheel landing in a crosswind), I'd want a tire rated for the full weight of the airplane. But that's just me.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

The 26" and 29" ABW are rated for 1800# per tire. I guess 1600# for the Desser is not bad at all. As I understand these weights are rated for a static load (aircraft sitting on the ground) and have a safety margin built in for high G landings.

If one wing is up in the air with a wheel off the ground, you can be assured that the wing is still lifting a substantial portion of the weight of the plane.
