Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

Is there a good articulating camera set up that works remotely yet? I have a pipeline company that wants a wing or strut mounted camera, with the video screen and on/off controls that can be aimed, all from in the cockpit. I just saw something last week (but can't find it now) that was close, but when it was turned, it turned too quickly and was jerky because of that. If push came to shove, that could work I guess.

Way back when, Greg tried a complicated and expensive thing, but somehow it was not ready for the market then.

Nice, Diana. That was put together really well and fun to watch. Loved how the BCP shirt brings out the fun in pilots!

Ok, finally got around to putting together some of the best stuff I shot this summer. Nice to remember how nice it is around here in the summertime. :)

Very cool video Pokette!

Hey Rich! I like that set up! Simple and straight forward. I'll keep that one in mind as I work with the current set up. If it does't pan out, that is the next route I will go.

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

Great videos! I've noticed a slight wavy undulation in my HD170 Stealth at high power in climb. I don't know if it's due to airframe vibration or prop wash/vortexes, but I suspect the latter. I know that 4 cylinder engines like my O-360-C1F produce more vibration than 6 cylinder, so I'm curious to see if those of you with 6 cylinder engines have also noticed it. If so, that would tend to support the prop wash/vortex theory, in which case isolating the camera from airframe vibration wouldn't help. I have mine mounted on a short section of PVC pipe on the left wing strut, but I've also noticed the undulation at high power settings when the camera is mounted on the gear legs. It doesn't seem to make much difference whether the camera is mounted on the right or left side, but it's easier to see and control the camera with the remote when it's on the left.

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

I have a 6-cylinder engine and 3-blade prop. My camera (Stealth) is mounted far enough outboard to be well out of the prop wash, but I still get some jello effect at certain RPMs and power settings.

Are you still using the setup shown in the photo you posted on Jan 16?

Re: Drift HD170 Camera - My review from a pilots perspective

Yes, I'm still using the mounting arrangement shown on the 16-Jan post except that the camera in that picture is an Oregon Scientific ATC3K. I'm now using a HD170 Stealth, but it works the same way on the mounting. I've tried a lot of different mounts including padded hose clamps, RAM mounts, and various straps, but the I like the bungee/PVC pipe arrangement the best. I also mount the HD170 to a tube above my glare shield on occasion, but I get reflections and bug splats in the video. With the camera inside the airplane I can add headset audio, though. I've thought about routing a long wire out to the camera on the wing for the headset audio, but I don't want a bunch of tie wraps on my wing strut or a loose wire that might rip out with the wind. I can always add audio during the editing process if necessary.

Next time I use the HD170 I'm going to try rotating the mount and lens somewhat on the PVC pipe and aiming the camera to omit the nose and propeller. I don't think it would take much of an angle to do that but I'm not sure if it would look strange.

I tried Sony Vegas Platimun 11, but the rendered videos stuttered, so I switched to Magix. It has a similar but slightly less polished GUI, but it works! I chose it after reading this thread: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=9163&p=121977&hilit=magix#p121977

I have been using the Magix line-up for almost 5 years now and have found it to be a great product. It does a pretty darn good job at all things for a PC based software.

I have the Magix software now. Wow is that a complex bit of kit. And I was just getting the hang of Windows Moviemaker...

Is there a decent tutorial around for basic operations of this software? The manual that comes with is not easy to follow (for me at least).

Hey All,

I have a brand new, still in the packaging, Drift LLBAT Long Life Battery that I got last week, that I would like to sell. Yep, I ordered the wrong one for my camera. I paid $21.19 plus $5.17 shipping for it. Make me an offer and I'll ship it to you for free.

I have been playing around with some mounts. Unfortunately if I mount the camera under the wing the remote won't work. These videos are done in 720p, it looks better than the 1080p setting. Click in the lower right corner to view in 720p and then go full screen.

Tried to fix the links for you. The ones that end in =1 wouldn't work. But when I copied them in to the address bar, it will take you to them. So I just made them clickable links.

What are you using to mount the camera on the top of your wing?

If you hover over the "youtube" button in the post editor, it shows you the code example.

Hey Zane,

Any idea why the two with "=1" wouldn't work? I tried it with and without it. No luck either way. Just curious.
