Fall at Castle Lakes, CO - with friends.

Last weekend I met a group of friends at Castle Lakes, CO (PRIVATE - INVITE ONLY) for a impromptu get together. The fall colors were simply fantastic and the owners were equally enthusiastic about inviting us.

A few of us rented n Jeep in Lake City and enjoyed driving Cinnamon Pass into Silverton, Black Bear Pass dropping down into Telluride, then Ophir Pass to Ouray, Engineer Pass back to Lake City. An incredible loop with big views in every direction. Also, we were able to head up to the old Carson townsite above Castle Lakes.

At 9300 ft elevation, this is a one way airstrip surrounded by 14ers in a narrow canyon! (Density altitude can easily reach 12,500+ ft.) Please email us for more information at [email protected] if this peaks your interest.

On the way to Castle Lakes, I stopped by Quarter Circle Circle. Crisp mountain air and antelope at 9600 ft.

As always, great pictures Matt! =D>

This area has some well preserved mining history along with the towns that once supported them. Taking the time to Jeep the Alpine Loop is definitely worth it. You can also access the area via Telluride (TEX), Creede (C24), or Animas Airpark(00C), etc.

I love this time of year in Colorado and Utah - we're getting the same color here around Park City. I wish I could capture it half as well as you do!! I love the old mining towns and the falls. Truly amazing scenery!

I noticed you've got smaller feet on your 180 - what's up with that?? :o

Mike, I use the little tires to gain a little speed, but now that the distance flying is done, the 31s are back on.

Dropping over Black Bear and descending over Telluride with the powerhouse in view is quite an unforgettable sight. It's amazing they built that to power the mine and town (still does to this day) back in 1907.

Excellent TR Matt. That power house looks storybook. The colors are amazing! Backcountry flying and four wheeling in fall mountain colors of Colorado, and in the same weekend?

That is storybook. Living the dream.

I just looked at these again and discovered the deer laying in the grass in front of the courthouse. Don't know how I missed that the first time through.

As stated, amazing pictures and place!

Saw these pictures while sitting in a windowless classroom, learning about maintenance supply. Made me really homesick. Amazing report.

Some pictures of the Orange river with the leaves would be nice. But don't drink the water.

Cheers...Rob

I can't get enough of Colorado! I went exploring a month or so ago with the Skywagon...Image And Honda Trail 70... Image

My Wife and I had breakfast in Telluride.... Image

Lunch in Creede... Image

And Dinner in Aspen... Image

Two people plus overnight bags on a Honda trail 70 = Dumb and Dumber re-enactment in Aspen. The looks from innocent bystanders were priceless!
