Re: High Sierra Fly-in Oct 24-27 - FUEL SPONSOR - KCXP

What is the chance that the fuel could be awarded to the longest distance measured in HOURS instead of miles....??

Think I have Rob beat by 20miles  Sure hope things work out so I can make it.

So is the dry lake bed smooth enough for a 2000lb airplane on tiny 600x6 tires?

Whee.......Is that even a question! My mains are 600X6 and my nose is a 500X5...I do just fine! And I weigh between 2000-2575 lbs. FYI this is the 3SGS!

That place where you landed last year Brian is dry as a bone now! I am calling it "The mud shop" We will have to take everyone there for at least one landing...

Just by a pure guess, I am betting we have around 50-60 planes coming so far...Its going to be fun!

I have a very good buddy that owns "Man Wielding Fire" in Reno. He offered today to come out and cater or Saturday night dinner! I still need to ponder a bit on that but thinking this could be very good! We are going big time with porta-potties, free beer and t shirts and a catered cowboy dinner Saturday night!

Some have asked what they can bring?? Bring a pumpkin and your smiling face! Donations will be accepted of course but not mandatory. I hope to make this one of the more sought after fly-ins due to its fun nature. I hope that folks are into hanging out with one another around the fire and sharing stories rather than returning to the confines of your own camp early to do your own thing. Lets be social!!!

In a few days I will post a common freq to be used for inbound aircraft and a traffic pattern for the strip. Each morning we will have a pilot briefing on areas to be flown, common traffic patterns at most of the places we fly and land, along with some other basic safety stuff. I actually enjoy doing this with everyone and feel it is important given the number of aircraft attending. The strip itself will be marked and a flag will be flying at the threshold as well for wind direction.

Ideas and concerns are welcome. Please express any that you may have.

2 thumbs up! To anyone attending, I would encourage being a part of this briefing and deferring to some guide knowledge. Most people know that Kevin is a backcountry/heli ski guide and manages groups of skiers through avalanche zones as his job-- his leadership is solid and he has local knowledge. The larger the turnout, the more organization has to be embraced to avoid any accidents. Glad to see this being addressed.

This is starting to sound like Burning Man Lite. Flying Man?

I've still got Black Rock Desert dust in my tent. Guess I'll be adding some Yerrington dust to it.

Stay dusty!

Sounds like a GREAT time. VERY jealous of those that can make it this year. This is the sort of thing that builds backcountry camaraderie!

Good day hear today with winds abating...sort of...tomorrow should be real nice!

I can tell you the lake bed for our fly in is in all time shape! Rock hard, no dust and perfect! Went out this AM to check on things and visit a few of the spots on the circuit.

Here is "3 Shotgun Shells" ...home to our High Sierra Fly in. Drop in over the 2 little green trees on the lookers left end (west end) of the lake bad and touch down. From there you have around 1200' to stop, give or take.

Rocks line the runway

One of my favorites..."The Gold Mine" ...I have just departed in this photo. When you land here you feel like your landing on an aircraft carrier...well, at least I think thats what it would feel like. There are no go arounds so fly overs are angled. Will explain more at the fly in during the briefs.

And a quick stop by "3 Wagons"...Your runway is dry Bryan...

Good day

Re: High Sierra Fly-in Oct 24-27 - FUEL Discount- KCXP

Hey kevin,
Would like to come to the fly in but I have no experience off-airport. This looks like it might be a good location for a rookie to learn (prior to the fly in). Would you recommend that or maybe another location? I would be flying a stock 172 out of KCXP. Very cold in the Carson Valley this morning but it is supposed to be real nice all weekend. Feel free to PM me or you can email me at [email protected]

thanks,
Steve

Steve you should do fine on the dry lake. You got to get off the black top at some point. Use a slow decent rate. A dry lake is kind of like glass water, your depth perception won't be normal.

Exactly.

One of my pet peeves with flight training is you don't do an actual off-field, soft or short field landing. All my training was at a 6,000 ft paved runway at sea level. Even if you fly airport to airport you should have experience off-field in case of an emergency.

In my case, this is the kind of flying I want to do so I need to jump right in.

Thanks for the encouragement Rob

Re: High Sierra Fly-in Oct 24-27 - FUEL Discount- KCXP

I concur with Rob Steve! The lake bed is a great place to fly. You have so many around you its paradise! Do a few low / slow passes, touch down lightly, perform a go-around and come back and do it again. The single biggest thing I believe in this type of flying is knowing your spot and NAILING IT when you commit. Over runs are not an option and missing your touchdown by several hundred feet is not an option. Go practice! I look forward to meeting you.

FYI, the lake bed just east of Dayton and just south of Spanish Springs (the one thats close to 50) is perfect for practicing all day long. I was there this am... I can also meet you anytime.

Thanks for the tips Kevin. I'll take you up on the offer to go out - I really appreciate it. Supposed to rain midweek so early or late next week works for me. Let me know what day works best for you or, email me with your contact info and I will call you.
Thanks

Hey Emmet, I'm in. I'll bring a pink towel and you bring a white one. But if we flash folks like that I think it's just going to result in a bunch of aborted landings.
