Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

"Compressor Station Number 11 Airstrip" near Prineville. I tried to land here once, but it looked a little to rough now a days. Owned by a power company?

"Compressor Station Number 10 Airstrip" SE of Kent. Presumable owned by the same power company as the one above.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Washburn Heights Airstrip, south of Lebanon, and owned by Randy & Gayle Simpson. This is a fun but short strip I've landed at. I know of at least one 185 that hit the trees on the end. About 375' of usable. Randy operates his Firestar(I think that's what it is) out of it. He also makes and sells ultra light titanium tie down stakes, the screw in kind. I have contact information if anyone is interested.

I think I met a guy who crashed there. He had a 185 and was "very confident" in his short field skills.

B&H Airstrip in Wallowa National Forest. I believe it is USFS owned.

Choss,

I think this thread is pretty cool for us Oregonians. I love your enthusiasm! I would love to see a lot of these strips become destinations for us some day.

I have been to the Cold Springs Airstrip pictured above. It's identified on some forest service and other maps. There is a cabin that you can hike to and stay in from the strip and the strip is a short hike from the river (and a road). It would be a great place to improve! As it sits now, I would not recommend landing there. There are big rocks (softball and bigger) that have surfaced and are difficult to see from the air. Had to do some hand picking to get out of there!

Nice work! Looks maybe a little too rough for my nose dragger. I think it would be a great idea if a bunch of Oregon pilots could agree on one strip to focus on trying to bring back to life, and then do it! This might be a perfect candidate.

This is possibly "Big Indian Airstrip" in the Steens. More discussion here: http://www.backcountrypilot.org/community/forum/latest/big-indian-strip-near-steens-mtn-or-6657

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Not much visible in this image, but there used to be the Pioneer Villa Airstrip paralleling I5. You could land an get fuel at the gas station there. I think it was last used during the 1980's.

Everyone knows about Bull Run, but might as well add it to the list. BLM owned.

Everyone also knows about Chukar Flat on the John Day. Private land, but access okay. Is that correct?

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

We started doing this very thing here in CO and have inventoried at LOT of old and abandoned airstrips. We are in the slow and tedious process of working with the BLM getting a few strips back to operational.

There's a lot out there, but be prepared to be in it for the long haul. All it takes is for a few dedicated folks to show a lot of initiative and start contacting the right folks willing to help.

We hope to have some good news by the end of the year. :)

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

This is the Pinnacle Ranch Airstrip on the Owhyee and it is no secret but is uncharted and unregistered. This would be an awesome strip to gain access too! I've driven down there and the its an sweet place to camp and explore. BLM owned.

Table Rock BLM Airstrip would be another great one to gain access to again.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

This is a cool strip up Fall Creek, to the east of Eugene. It's in a narrow valley about half a mile wide where the strip is, whats unique about the strip is it runs mostly perpendicular to the valley and not parallel like most valley/canyon strips. The strip is 1,450' and then its another 1,300' till you'd hit the raising terrain on the other side. My oil pressure gauge was all over the place one day when I was right by it so I landed to make sure everything was okay, fun strip but not so much while thinking about said issues. A good strip to keep in mind since ya never know when the same thing might happen to you. Any one know anything about it?

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Illahee Flats Airstrip on the Umpqua, it used to be grass and USFS owned. Now it is privately owned and was for sale in 2012 for a cool $4,000,000.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Ha, one more I remembered, and since the people I met there were cool, its uncharted and people on here like grass, maybe someone on here would like to visit as well.

Walker Airport is in between Creswell and Cottage Grove. I flew over about six months ago and some guys on the ground waved, so I landed. At the time only 500' on the south end was mowed and the guys on the ground operate an RC club on the south end, they said a plane or two might still fly out of there. But most importantly they said they had no problem with people landing there, and seemed quite excited.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Rowena Dell is just a few miles east of my location. There is a low spot in the middle full of weeds and brush that prevents it from being useable. Not sure who owns it.
