I noticed several of the strips are listed as BLM strips. I thought it was already permissible to land on BLM owned land?

Yup, you can land anywhere on BLM land as long as it is not a Wilderness or Wilderness Study Area, so all those on BLM land would be fair game. I believe Pinnacle Ranch and also Table Rock fall into a Wilderness Study area, hence why they are both closed now.

"Bates Airstrip" right next to Bates State Park near the junction of Highway 26 & Highway 7. Possibly an old USFS strip?

This strip is located on NF land near the headwaters of the South Fork of the John Day.

This strip I believe is located in Malheur National Forest, but not sure if it is privately owned or not.

USFS Airstrip? Winema National Forest, west of Thompson Reservoir. Not many 80' wide FS roads that I know about....

Yeah some of them are on Shortfield.com, once I do some more research and find out a little bit more about some of these strips I'll start to post some on there :)

Thanks to Scolopax for digging up these next two, both in the Kalamiopsis area.

Fish Hook Peak USFS Airstrip. Not much visible in any of the imagery of this strip.

I believe that it is known as Penny Flats. Been in there a few times. It's a pretty decent stop.

I think that's an awesome idea. However, so many of these look like they are in need of attention and/or re-opening before they could be used and identified in a book like that???! That amounts to a lot of liaison work and time up front making contacts and cutting red tape. Or we could just start using them again like we never stopped! :D

He could note in the book that "some assembly is require" on the rough airfields. Work parties to the rescue!


Thanks a ton for compiling this information Choss! This is a great thread! I am ready to make time to help improve or restore any of these. The book sounds like a fabulous idea! I'd love to help on the gathering of info. Especially since I know it involves visiting the sites.

I believe the coordinates on the site are a little off, this strip looks like it actually could easily be re-opened again...

I agree. If you put it on ground level and compare the view with the website picture it looks like that's the spot! 700 or less ft!
