Winkle Bar Airport on the Rogue. I believe this used to be owned by the USFS, its uncharted, but listed on airnav.com now as privately owned.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Paradise Lodge and Half Moon Bar on the Rogue are both privately owned and closed to the public, neither are a secret but are cool looking uncharted strips that are probably somewhat historically significant to aviation in Oregon.

I noticed the Half Moon Bar website openly states they have an airstrip, so maybe they still allow people to fly-in. They had a deadly accident there in 2001 when a 182 hit some trees on short final killing the passenger. And then in 2006 a 180 crashed while maneuvering from Paradise to Half Moon killing all on board. It's a shame places like these can't have liability waivers so they don't have to worry about the few that screw it up for the rest of us.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Agness Emergency Airstrip is no secret but its uncharted, and unlisted. Awesome fried chicken! Image

But what is interesting about this image is you can see another strip at the bottom of the image, it's private, and the guy that uses it fly's UNDER the bridge on his approach! Anyone know the guy?

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Calvert Peak Airstrip is listed on sectionals and is no secret, though it was closed due to a couple of deadly accidents. But it is a USFS Airport and would be an great one to lobby the USFS to open to the public, awesome views up there, it would be a sweet place to camp and watch the sunset! So I figured I might as well add it to the list being that it is somewhat of a long lost airstrip.

Yeah looks like maybe half of it is still usable. Have you flown in there before?

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Wonder Airport located in SW Oregon is uncharted but registered with the FAA. What interests me about it is that GoogleEarth shows it, but also add's "Historical" to the name. Any one know the history of this strip?

Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

I grew up 3 miles from the Wonder airport, but have never been able to find it from the air. Haven't really tried that hard though, was always more focused on my dad's pastures.

2 friends my age died at Calvert peak in a 182 in 1991.

Really bummed I never got to go into Half Moon or Paradise before they closed. My dad always talked them up as really fun approaches.

I drove into Fall Creek to check it out. There are some pretty good sized saplings in the middle IIRC. Unsure what the status of the strip is. We've discussed it here before.

Foster Ranch Airfield on the Umpqua. USFS owned and probably last used in the 1960's.

Likewise... Maybe we could convince em to let us fly in in the Savannah and Mexican Maule. I know Tom Buce who owns Land's Inn Ranch Airport, his daughter works at Paradise during the summer.

Speaking of Land's Inn, that would be a great place to have a fly-in sometime!

Here is where Half Moon Bar still mentions "Airstrip" under the Highlights section: http://www.thehalfmoonbarlodge.com/about/accommodation/ so that makes me think that maybe they will still allow people to fly in with permission?

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Farm Yard Field Airport near Elkton is uncharted but it is registered with the FAA. On GoogleEarth it looks like they might have a camp ground there, and it is right on the river, so that might interest people to try and gain permission to land.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

GoogleEarth shows this field to be "Elkton Airfield" no trace of an airstrip is visible in the 1994 image. Does any one know if there was a strip here? I believe it was shown on some old USGS maps.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

This is shown as Norway Airstrip on GoogleEarth, as the name suggests it is in Norway just off Highway 42. If its open for landings, I think there is a cafe/bodega within walking distance.

Re: long lost/uncharted/unknown Oregon airstrips...

Choss,

When you've found them all we've got to get these pinned on a map with the associated information on a spreadsheet so we can divide and conquer! It's pretty awesome to see this many "forgotten" strips throughout Oregon!

Scolopax and I have been talking about driving down to the Fall River strip for a while now to do some recon perhaps with a chainsaw but just haven't done it yet. Sounds like Big Marsh is in need of some attention too when we make it down that way!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks! Yeah I would eventually like to try and compile a book "Airplane Camping in Oregon" essentially Oregon's own "Fly Idaho", I think that would be a pretty cool resource for Oregon pilots to have, and hopefully include a lot of these strips listed here. I've written two rock climbing guide books, and I really enjoy compiling information like this. Would any one be interested in a publication like this?

I think that's an awesome idea. However, so many of these look like they are in need of attention and/or re-opening before they could be used and identified in a book like that???! That amounts to a lot of liaison work and time up front making contacts and cutting red tape. Or we could just start using them again like we never stopped! :D

Either way, I like the possibilities.

Yeah, no rush to publish anything, but I'd like to start compiling information, making contacts etc. etc... since as of right now its raining and I've got a lot of free time 8)

I'm looking forward to exploring once these days get longer and the VFR weather is more consistent... And I welcome anyone and everyone to join me!

He could note in the book that "some assembly is require" on the rough airfields. Work parties to the rescue!
