My new Skywagon! Let the mods begin!

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

After the Sportsman STOL, and the new panel, and the utility interior, and possibly a flat floor extended baggage if I can figure out how to deal the 24v battery thing, then yep I'd say titanium gear might find itself on the list.

The weight advantage makes sense to me, but does Titanium gear “perform” any differently than the stock steel on Skywagons?

I’ve flown another tailwheel with Titanium gear and it seemed to flex quite a bit compared to steel.

Re: My new Skywagon! Let the mods begin!

I haven't seen any titanium legs but a pilot that was flying my friend's Air Tractor here last summer said he has a 10,000 hr 180. He was nervous about fatigue so installed the titanium and he seems to like them. He has a grass strip by his hangar/home in Oklahoma.

Titanium gear info:

No prices shown but a couple years ago it was about $10K a set as I recall.
Probably more now.

More importantly, I can aim the Little Buddy up under my center stack to coax the avionics up from -20F, or whatever.
Reiff and Tanis will both have booths at the trade show in a couple weeks.

^^This^^ I had this done as well. Easily done and very convenient.

GORGEOUS 'Wagon, btw!

Thanks. These are the solid, non-vented ones. Up here vents aren't the best idea because rain can go through the vents, get under the cover, and then freeze the cover to the wing. For my other 185 I had vented covers as it was always down south. I also had a set of mesh ones at that time (still do I think) but never used them. The mesh ones are just for taking advantage of the spoilers. I probably haven't used them because 1. they are annoying to install (throw over the wing-less mass), and 2. they don't use bungees but rather straps to cinch them up tight which seems like a lot of work in the wind- albeit they'd be tighter.

The covers don't weigh very much, you'd be surprised how little they weigh, the engine cover being the heaviest because it's insulated. And they pack down pretty small.

And they have them or can make them for all configurations including with WingX or with Sportsman STOL or both.

Thanks! That's exactly the information I was looking for.

We have the stock wing with VG's right now, and it looks like it's going to stay that way for a while. I really like the spoilers - watching the pics from the windstorm at HSF last fall really lit up my radar on that, I had been waffling a little! I want to get a full set for him - engine, wing, prop, tail. we have a window/cabin cover already, which also keeps the doors closed in the wind when it gets rocking.

In a project this size, forgive me for asking about a minor detail, but how did you mount the inReach and where did you get the mount? I have a new 185 and was just planning on velcro-ing it to the brace.

Stu, I used four screws through the Selkirk panel. The powered mount I bought from Garmin. Assuming you have the same inReach as I here is the link:

Be careful with windshield covers in wind, especially in sandy or dusty environs. You can destroy a windshield in no time with a cover in windy, dusty conditions.

The 12/24v German made accessory sockets came today. Be nice to have all the charging plugs I could need.

Why don't you just install numerous USB charging ports instead? You know thats what it going to be used for...

That's an excellent question. And the answer is because Garmin hasn't yet learned what a USB connection is. Both my powered inRreach mount and my GDL 39 cables have old-school cigarette lighter plugs. Hopefully some day they'll figure it out, but probably not till everyone else is charging things through the air. ;-)

Re: My new Skywagon! Let the mods begin!

Barnstormer,

If you are looking for recommendations on further mods:

My 180 has repeatedly suffered leading edge damage to the HS from off airport and rough field ops over the years, so I decided to install the Tanalian Aviation horizontal stabilizer kit on my wagon.

Image

Image

The STC replaces all of the skins, incorporating replaceable leading edges that are 0.040" thick as opposed to 0.020. It also bumps up the lower skin thickness to 0.025" and eliminates the spanwise seams in the skins.

It feels incredibly stout compared to the stock stabilizer.

The drawbacks are:

1. added weight - Probably 5 pounds on the tail (which is actually favorable for many wagons)

2. a large rock strike would likely transfer more energy inboard to the attachment structure and the tailcone than a stock leading edge.

Joel at Tanalian Aviation said that he has 65 of these kits flying and has never sold a replacement leading edge.

Re: My new Skywagon! Let the mods begin!

Thanks Jake. One of the RSTOL 185's I was looking at over at Merrill boasted a beefed up elevator. I had never heard of the mod until now, I appreciate you sharing. I'll look into it. Mine already has a an abrasion boot so that helps.

Cleaned, primed, and ready for paint. Also bought a pair of "hub caps" to keep the wheel bearings clean so painting those as well.

Re: My new Skywagon! Let the mods begin!

Good idea going with the Cessna cap units, considering the mixed results people seem to experience with Monarch caps.
I think Atlee Dodge sells two different adapters for upgrading the "killer" recessed fuel necks,
although they're priced the same and look like pretty much the same thing.

That is cool stuff hotrod. I didn't know there were other options, I'll bookmark those, thanks.

Things are painted, next the install. Pleased for sure.

BAS Tail Pull. If all goes well this is tonight's mod. Requires a skinny guy to go into the tail. :-)
