Re: 6th Annual High Sierra Fly-in 2015 Oct 22-25

Time to get going on this years fly in!

All sorts of things to announce but most importantly, WE HAVE GAINED A PIECE OF PRIVATE LAND!!!!

This years fly in details have been posted in the Fly-in / Events area so please make certain to sign up. If you think you have already make certain you have. Zane and I both created a thread and some of you were on the one that I deleted in order to have only one for all. Please re-sign up if you were one of the ones that got deleted.

Here is a map of the new location. A pilot procedure chart will be coming in the next few weeks along with some basic rules that I am certain all will agree upon. This new location will give us access for years to come and it allows us so many more options for all of us. Hot Springs, The high circuit in the Sierra Valley and the low circuit to the far east like Black Rock and High Rock Canyon. Not to mention we are working hard on a deal with the Pyramid lake indian tribe to allow us access on the north shore for fishing and swimming. Just don't count on it yet.

We will also hold a STOL demo / contest with prize money $$...Dont plan on quitting your day job if you win. 3 categories and only 15 planes per class. You must sign up for that prior by sending me an email at [email protected].

More details are provided in the fly in thread in regards to fuel and such. Additional activities will also be posted as they arise. Looking to really go over the top this year and I sure hope to see as many of you as possible. I know many are down on the big fly ins but this new location can allow for a 747 to show up...seriously. Not to mention the theme and idea will be to gather and stay at the lake bed and enjoy each others company. The large fire pit in the evening is a true social and I hope you are as excited about it as I am!

Stay tuned for more!

Dang, this looks like a ton of fun. A good positive note to this years event Kevin, +1 for all your work!!

Would love to make it, but would have to be a drive-down for me, unless someone happened to be passing over south central Idaho!

I might have missed this but any chance a database of the landing areas will be made of that area like the one that was made last year? It was nice to scope out the areas via Google Earth before hand, read your notes, and get them in Foreflight before the fly-in.

Sorry, kids. I hate it but I have to go on a business trip leaving that weekend. I'm out. Have fun and be safe.

Although Soy is out, a couple of Cubs may be making the trek from Colorado and are starting to kick around caravan ideas. If anyone on the Front Range (or east of here) is interested, speak up as the time draws near and we can coordinate.

I'm thinking about making the trek from Lander WY, what's your potential route motosix? Could potentially meet up some where if you can put up with an 85hp champ ;)

I would love to fly with people. I'll be out of SLC in either the Wilga or a surprise new acquisition airplane.

We are looking at a route with 100-110mile legs because one of us is (hopefully!) a J3 with stock fuel tank. We both carry fuel bladders so quick-stop-fuel-ups are all the real J3 needs. Probably start north up to KSAA to avoid the big rocks then possibly towards the southern side of Salt Lake City rather than skirting southern WY. We are open to anything really, but distances between stops is our biggest hurdle. Maybe something like this:

https://skyvector.com/?ll=40.4607407470 ... KLOL%20H37

Could also go the Rawlins->Rock Springs etc route but the leg on the west side of Salt Lake coming in from the north may be too long for the stock tanks of a J3.

Speaking of which, your 85HP Champ is a speed demon compared to us. (J3-like Cubs rolling on 26s) We cruise in the 70s on a good day, so if you want to slow down for us we would love to caravan!! Slow-pokes unite!

If you're burning Mogas, consider stopping in Utah at West Desert Airpark and Delle Utah. http://www.rmkplanes.com/about.html. Delle is just a truck stop on I-80 west of Touelle. There is an uncharted strip there as well.

West Desert Airpark and Delle are both perfect for what we need. Thanks for the tip!

Any recent pirep for Delle? Looks huge from the satellite views:

With what your flying, you shouldn't have any issues with the strip. As you pointed out the area is huge and there are multiple landing options. The last time I looked the strip was in good shape; a gravel surface. The last time I landed there a tractor-trailer rig was blocking the entrance/exit to the runway so we improvised. Here is a take off video from the parking lot:
