Re: UPDATED 9/13/15 6th Annual High Sierra Fly-in 2015 Oct 2

Drive in directions to the HSF

Reno to Dead Cow Lake by ground transportation

N. McCarren to Doyle, CA 50 minutes
The Doyle turn off is 17 miles from Hallelujah Junction on Hiway 395
Mile 0 turn right off 395
Mile .8 right on Hackstaff Rd (sign for BLM ORV Park)
Mile 1.2 pavement turns to maintained dirt road. 45 MPH
Mile 2.5 turn right on Lassen Co 327 ( also sign for BLM ORV Park)
Mile 12.6 Drive on moderate washboard road about 35MPH to California/ Nevada state line
The road changes name here to Fish Springs Road.
Mile 14.8 turn left on to a one lane dirt road. There is at this time a metal arrow sign labeled
“Bohannon” on the fence corner. Dirt hard but highly washboard, about 10 MPH.
Mile 16.0 right on road toward Lake Bed. This is even a slower road. Bear right around the
washed out culvert and go past the “House of Broken Dreams”.
Mile 18.8 enter Lake Bed and go left, drive on playa to fly in site.
Mile 22.1 (Babylon) HSF airport, Dead Cow Lake.

Speeds are an estimate. Higher speed on washboard can cause steering drift on some vehicles.
Estimated time Doyle to Babylon is 45-50 minutes

With a small tire Maule and a wee little engine (180 Hp) I wouldn't be setting any records for either short takeoffs or landings, but camping in the desert next to my plane still appeals to me. Is there a place for an entry level backcountry plane and a cautious pilot at an event like this?

Absolutely, this is about a gathering of friends connected by our interest in back country aviation. It is about having fun and enjoying each others company. We all began with small tires and engines. Come on out. The lake bed runway is long and there are lots of places you would be able to easily land if flying to some of the outlying areas.

Kevin does a great job putting this together. My guess is you'll be very glad you made the journey.

For sure you should go Flyhound. It is a great flyin; so good I'm trying to fit it and the 10hr drive into my schedule.

Definitely Flyhound! Like this site, it's about the common interest of backcountry flying and not the size of your tires or the plane you fly. As far as capability, it sounds like this area has a lot more landing options for the more conservative or mild to moderately capable pilot and/or aircraft. Great group of people. You won't regret attending.

Re: UPDATED 9/13/15 6th Annual High Sierra Fly-in 2015 Oct 2

Kevin is still discovering sites and hasn't taken time to count them yet. Sites for every level of skill. A couple of other guys followed his lead and purchased adjoining land so the event can cover over 300 acres of private ground and counting
He is finishing up plans for ground activities that will appeal to everyone. If there is any doubt, safety is the primary concern but fun is close second. I guarantee that this event will be memorable.

That's awesome. I have no idea how you talk people into sponsoring your endeavors, but I like it!

"Talk?" There's no talk involved. Have you ever seen Kevin in full NHL defenseman gear? Very persuasive!

That is impressive, but since it looks like he got his ass kicked, I would send in the other guy who did this to do the "persuading". :D :D :D

2 weeks out. I'll be headed down the eastside of the cascades from Hood River, OR on the morning of the 23rd.

Who else is headed that way from Oregon and Washington?

I'll be headed down south. Leaving Monday or Tuesday October 12th or 13th. Mt route will be Chicken Strip, Palm Desert, Kernville, Lake Havasu, Big Bear, Hemet. Then head north to Dead Cow Thursday 22nd.

So to all my SOCAL buddies I'll be looking for flying, food and cocktail partners. Butch, Walt, Russ, Big John, Little John, Doc, Dave, Joe and Rick.

Butch, I talked to Curtis, he said we can come by if we want. He will pick us up at the airport. I saw his plane parked in Idaho last week.

If any of you SOCAL guys are going to High Sierra maybe do a loose formation???

Mr Steel and Waterboy I'll gladly fly north with you on the way home.

WOW! $3.97 100LL at Big Bear.

Cheers...Rob

I received Kevin's very informative HSF email blast. What are most of you doing in regard to the lighting of your plane:

"Bring whatever lights your can find or come up with (to) wrap your plane at night. This will make for some great photos if everyone participates. Light up your plane! "

Christmas lights? 110V run from an inverter? Are there good 12V systems?
