Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

I've often considered stripping the plane and polishing to save weight(and save money on a new paint job). But I know it's a lot of work to keep it polished and looking good. If anyone can do it though, it's definitely you. Keep up the good work! =D>

I'm wondering what method you're using to strip the paint. MEK? Lot's of ventilation?

I'm curious. Aren't you worried about corrosion with a polished plane in the New England environment?

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Ill get the blog back up and going in the spring (I promise...)

But here are some a couple of quick pics. Bit more elbow grease needed before the interior can get paint. Exterior fuze is stripped and some experimenting was done with Nuvite to get a bead on what direction to take the airplane.

Avion panel is almost finished and pretty much all the goodies have been ordered. Hopefully she will be flying for Sun N Fun. Oshkosh at the latest...

Yep, I think this is the stage where you look at those wings and start shaking your head. (especially the undersides #-o )

Got a patch down to the grade "S" polish yet? That will set the hook really deep.

I'm lost
but I'm not afraid

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

not yet. Just did a quick pass with F9. Going to wait for a long while before I start going with the "C" and then "S." The main reason for stripping the fuze now was to prevent any stray stripper from getting down inside and ruining the interior paint/closed cell when It was power washed. Figured if it was going to be stripped eventually, now was as good of a time as any.

Switching to interior work now....

Looks good! are you going to strip and polish the whole plane? I think it would look good polished with one or two colors like this :Image

Tom, I was just looking at that plane on Skywagons.com! Ha! Wish I could afford it. Love that silver look!

Indeed. It will be polished w/ some sort of colored stripe and colored leading edge/wingtips.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

You may want to leave the leading edge polished. My polished 150 de-ices a lot faster then the painted ones...FWIW

I have maroon leading edges, and horizontal stab. Yellow else where on the champ. I was camping last year, and there was a frosty night, the maroon was clear much faster than the rest.

True enough. A dark color clears off quick too.
Deep down I think Im just jealous that I don't have a polished 180... :(

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Personally I would love to have a polished 180 with some dark green trim.

Indeed. Geroge's C185GM was the inspiration for all this nonesense. I saw it when it was being built at Beegles. Got me bit. Going to do pretty much the same scheme.
