Re: Project: 180 Skywagon - Past Madness...

Okay, that's half the story.....so how many blades?

Either way, I believe you'll love the prop! I never met one I didn't really love. They'll make that machine as smooth as glass....

And, no worries about after action reports....at the rate you've been flying, I'd say, keep on flying....winter comes soon enough, and winter is for long posts.

Fly safe.

Re: Project: 180 Skywagon - Past Madness...

Yeah, Im a bit excited. Def shouldn't have spent the bread, but WTF. The prop that is coming off only has 740 some odd hrs since new so its pretty gluttonous to upgrade now. (good deal on a great "lightly" used prop for someone) The orig plan was to be smart and just fly... Maybe upgrade to a 3 blade when (and if I ever put a PPonk up front.)

It was actually A1Skinners post about possibly being sick (thinking bout you man) and our recent BCP deaths that got me thinking... Life is just to short so I pulled the trigger.

Which prop did I go with? The STC only covers a two blade for the stock O-470 so its the only real option, but for me, it was really the better choice anyway. The two blade pulls a bit harder, is cheaper, and is lighter than the three blade. The jury is out on exactly what the weight savings is going to be, but John at MT claims around 30 lbs, and at 45" of arm, the weight savings will really help by moving the CG a tiny bit aft.

Time will tell indeed....

I've talked to a couple of guys that are running MTs on Skywagons and some guys are breaking starter drives. So I would learn to hand prop it if you do much off airport work. I heard the old style drives are holding up better.

Ya the blades are so light on the MT that it badly lacks flywheel effect so you need a good starter, I have the skytec inline one on my 0-360 and it has been Excelent! Skytec actually recommended it over the flyweight for this reason.
You'll love the prop I don't know anyone who has gone back.

I totally get that!

Please keep us posted with your impressions.... I'm debating the 3 vs 2 blade issue right now myself with my 180.

By the way, did you ever get a chance to make those Cessna decals you were talking about awhile back?

thanks,

Re: Project: 180 Skywagon - Way Past the Madness...

Also got the prop gov back from the shop last week... Pulled it as it was getting a bit wonky and as the thing hadn't been overhauled since 99 it was about time. Figured if Im upgrading the prop I'd better get it all perfect... Love that old Garwin!

I had Aircraft Accessories do the work in Tulsa and they really did an amazing job. http://www.aircraftaccessoriesofok.com/governor_propeller.php

Re: Project: 180 Skywagon - Way Past the Madness...

Don't mean to be crass, but I'm curious as to the cost difference between a two-blade MT like you got and a comparable 88" 2-blade McCauley? I have no plans to re-prop my new-to-me 53 model, but it's fun to daydream about what I'll do when overhaul time comes.

Re: Project: 180 Skywagon - Way Past the Madness...

Im not exactly sure on the cost difference between a new 88" blackmac and the 2 blade MT, but it is a bit more.... but I bet not that much more. From what I can tell, the performance between the blackmac and MT are pretty close and either would be an upgrade.

Although looking forward to the performance boost, I pulled the trigger on the prop first and foremost for the weight savings. At a book listing of 46lbs, the 2 blade MT should really make a significant difference in my CG which is now right up against the forward limit. Depending on who does the talking, I should be saving between 20-30lbs... but whatever it is, at -45" of arm, it should get her right back into the sweet spot.

I will post the weight savings when I pull the prop. Plan is to fly it another 25-35 hrs or so till the wx gets bad, then do the WingX and prop all at once. Will be a good excuse to get her back on the scales again also...

EDIT: MT USA strecthes the truth a bit in their sales info. Wt difference is really only 14lbs.

Re: Project: 180 Skywagon - Way Past the Madness...

With the airplane grounded while the gov was out for overhaul, I also got to catch up on some of the smaller items that have been still hanging on the punch list. When Ron Matta at Aviation Creations did my seats, I had him use the extra leather to make a bunch of matching accessory pockets.

Finally got around to mounting the wing root pockets.

Also installed an external antenna for the Garmin 796.

I like those pockets Greg. I my have to have Ron make some for me as well. Did you just attach them to the foam with 3m adhesive?

Nah... I was afraid the adhesive would eventually pull away from the foam. I also wanted to be able to remove them so I just used two PKs for each. The center one was a bit easier on the 180 than yours would be as the 180 has the electric fuel sender. I made a blanking plate that I covered in black foam to cover the center lightning hole. The pocket is screwed to that. He did a really nice job. I also have two for the rear pax and two for the ext baggage. Just need to get around to installing them.
