Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I took advantage of the great fall weather and did a local flight around my home base. I shot these:

Mysterious bumps. I have always wondered what these are. Does anyone know?

The mounds are most often called Patterned Ground. Some have local names. The locals around Heppner Oregon call them Biscuit Scabs. My old Geography Prof at CWU coined the term Manashtash Mounds. Geologists have differing opinions on the cause or origin.

Sadness is the end of float season... back to KBRD's float pond and off to the hoist. (Aquas are too narrow for our standard floatplane trailer - thus the flat deck trailer)

went up to the North Shore later. 38 deg, howling wind and sleet. But sun popping through now and then:

Very nice pictures! I wish I could shoot through an open window instead of through the plexiglass...

We have a similar phenomenon in the Shasta Valley. Popular theory is that they were created by space aliens, or maybe the Lemurians, but the geologists refer to them as schollendomes and suggest that they were created by hydrostatic pressure of liquid magma under a congealed crust.

Your pictures are spectacular as always, thanks for sharing.

Re: Where did you fly today?

The brilliant maples were finished, but the deep red oaks were in high color last weekend. Debbie was doing her long cross country in the 150, so I went up in the Cub to take pics and listen to her on .9 / .8 and .7 She did great! 8)

Re: Where did you fly today?

Friend of mine is selling his 300 acres of hunting land (trout in the stream too) west of Gull lake, so we went over yesterday and took some pics.

Somebody with a newly built Mustang had flown up from Mpls to do some fishing.

Several beaver ponds and a bunch of deer stands on the land. Plus barns and a nice house.

In Washington State they are called Mima Mounds. We even have a Mima Mounds Natural Reserve with hiking trails through the mounds. They can be pretty darned big.

Here's a shot I took of the mounds in the Puget Sound Grasslands:
Image

As far as their origin, there are lots of theories, but no proven source. One idea was that they were created by large, prehistoric gophers. The current leading hypothesis is that they were created by plants.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I skipped the High Sierra Fly-in this year because the weather for departing from Puget Sound was projected to be bad, and the weather for my return was supposed to be even worse. Well dang if the weather here didn't improve! I should have made the trek out to the desert after all. BLAST. Instead of joining my people at Dead Cow, I took a short hop around my neighborhood late in the day with interesting light shining on the newly fallen snow covering some of our peaks.

Re: Where did you fly today?

I've heard those mounds (seen in Idaho also) are like the drag reducing dimple tape, or the dimples on a golf ball. When the earths rotation slows, more of them appear, if it goes too fast some disappear. Its Mother Nature doing it, all automatic, amazing!
You're welcome.

I took these yesterday of where the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline will go under the Little Sioux River. It is about 15 miles SE of me in NW Iowa. The boring machine must be quite a deal.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Got in what I hope was my last riverbank landing of the year a week ago today. The winds were super squirrely between Birchwood and Big Lake, but smoothed out later on enough to make it enjoyable. Hopefully it'll be ski season soon!

Yeah, it was a little sporty at times. Didn't stay on the ground long - just long enough to load my friend and his gear, snap a picture, and fire it up again. Didn't get sandblasted by a gust, but it wouldn't have taken long!

Re: Where did you fly today?

BRD, you sure get some amazing pictures. I took a picture of a tree two years ago that was a spectacular red color and this year most of the leaves fell off before it changed to a mediocre orange.

Great weather for an impromptu 170B meet-up last week. Three planes in total. Enjoyed meeting some good folks, and comparing mods with AKGreg:
