Not directly backcountry, but I flew over to Paine field in Everett, WA yesterday to see Paul Allen's collection of WWII hardware at his Flying Heritage Museum.
First, a picture of a real Fieseler Storch for Drifter Driver. This thing was immaculate, and BIG!

Then a "brand new" mosquito the museum just received in pieces from New Zealand. Since the plane was in parts, it wasn't very interesting, but these 2 RR Merlin engines waiting to be installed were pretty cool. The end of the 1 piece wing and the tail end of the fuselage are also visible

This doesn't fly, but I'd love to have one once I get to the back country! When you turn the wee little front wheel, it affects the clutches and brakes on the tracks so it actually does turn with normal motorcycle inputs. There are 2 backwards facing seats on the rear. What a hoot!

I wasn't aware of it, but Germany made a piloted version of the V-1 buzz bomb. It was a kamikaze-style machine that was never actually used because of pilot shortages. Scary beast though!

Finally, I got to see the Ansari X-Prize that was won by Spaceship 1 and the White Knight. Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites company built these craft with Paul Allen funding, so Paul Allen got to keep the trophy and the $10M prize. I guess the trophy doesn't fit with the décor in any of Paul Allen's homes.

Overall a very fun visit, and the docents were extremely well informed about both the airplanes and the specific history of the planes in the collection. Most of these fly on a regular basis! Ya gotta love that!.
