heck terry, dont worry about the champ, they go in and out of milehigh and falconberry just fine, just like the old callairs, a blistering 75hp is fine when in the right hands....!

Oh! Not cool! Well, you will be missed. Let us know when you will be there and maybe we will slip and meet to for a night or two.

How much beer does a guy need to be able to strap to a motorcycle for everyone to overlook the fact that he didn't fly in?

As long as the weather is good, then you shouldn't have any major problems in the champ. I plan on taking my 65hp Taylorcraft (someday :D )

I think your mountain proficiency is much more a factor than your aircraft performance, so I think it's smart that you realize that. Get some mountain-specific dual instruction, study density altitude and related performance for your aircraft, fly solo, pack light, and I think you'll be fine.

From what I am told by other champ owners, it is not the aircraft I am worried about, it is me. I am a new pilot. Because of where I live, every flight is mountain flying and I have some good local talent that is familiar with the strips around here to teach me, but I will not have very many hours in the Champ by then. Right now I am sanding and replacing fabric on the Champ while I rent a 150.
Good chance I will either ride my Ducati Multistrada there, or if I sell my 2 race bikes and replace them with one KTM 690, I will ride that.

I'll be there unless there's wildfire.

Re: 2011 BCP Fly-In Dates???

It would be very rare to have any wildfires in June, especially anything with any size. The wetest times of the year in Idaho are May and June. Late season snowshowers are a bigger threat, or are those early season snowshowers? True backcountry pilots won't let a fire slow them down, just downwind and canyon turns. Maybe gunshots for dinner are a hinderance for some, but I think you need to be tough or wear kevlar.

Re: 2011 BCP Fly-In Dates???

This was published in the Idaho Aviation Association April Newsletter:

JOHNSON CREEK CARETAKERS APPOINTED
Dave and Cornelia Shotwell have joined the Division of
Aeronautics team as the Johnson Creek Caretakers. They are
very well qualified, having owned a construction company in
Twin Falls for over 25 years. Dave is a pilot, owns two planes
and was on the Twin Falls Airport Advisory Board. Dave and
Cornelia managed the Whitewater Ranch on the Main Salmon
River full time for three years. During their employment there
they did major repairs, cooking, cleaning, interacted with
guests, grounds maintenance and maintained the airstrip. They
have great personalities and should be a terrific fit at Johnson
Creek . They also live in McCall. Stop in and welcome them this
summer when you stop at Johnson Creek.

Does any one posting here know these folks?

Re: 2011 BCP Fly-In Dates???

Just joined the Group. I'm still under construction on my Tundra bush plane and it will not be ready by June. So, if anyone is headed to Johnson Creek by way of Smith Valley, NV (see NV33.com) and would like someone to share the journey and expense, please let me know.

Re: 2011 BCP Fly-In Dates???

Welcome to the site nevada. Here is to hoping you enjoy building and flying your plane as much as I have. I was intrigued with the Tundra when looking for a kit; ultimately I chose a Bearhawk. My wife & son will be going with me so unfortunately I'm out of room.

When do you think you'll have yours flying? We should get together to mauraude the NV skies sometime. I was almost over to your side of the state last Friday to get around weather when heading to Phoenix; I decided it was too far out of the way to get around the NV test site and just turned around for home instead. I almost swung by Austin to see if Joe was in, until I realized I had just enough time to beat 30knot surface winds home.

Re: 2011 BCP Fly-In Dates???

Mike,
Thanks for Welcoming me to the site.
I looked at the Bearhawk while at Arlington, WA, and decided on the Tundra. Got side tracked by ordering a subaru conversion on the same day. After waiting for two years on the subaru i converted to real aircraft engines. I'm now back to working on the plane and have an IO-470 to go with it. My goal is to have it flying this year. Where do you keep your plane? Eastern NV??
You are welcome to fly in to NV33 any time and I will show you around.

Re: 2011 BCP Fly-In Dates???

Thanks Jim, that will give me an excuse to fly. Maybe I can time it with em's visit?

I'm based in Elko right off of I-80. It looks like were about 220nm apart considering Fallon NAS Restricted areas. I'll go right over Joe (Austin) so I'll have to ask him if he wants to jump in with me? Also let me know if you happen to pass through here ...

OK, em, Mike & now Joe (Austin) come on down! (With this much interest, Zane will soon follow.) Go to NV33.com and you will see a pic of Farias Wheel Airport. My hangar is at the north end, the one with the Blue roof.

That looks like a really nice place to live! Zane might already be looking at comercial flights to RNO. I normally have Fri, Sat, & Sun off and would like to make it over to Minden sometime, too. We'll just have to see what the weather patterns bring. More rain forecast this weekend; today is really nice though. Let's hope the weather changes for the better before the JC fly-in. :D

em,
I went to your photo gallery and checked out Jackson on the SF sectional. Your plane is beautiful and your panel very neat! I would like to see you and your plane over here. Pick a smooth air day and come over. The hangar has all the basics for an over night. Bring your sleeping bag.

Jim, you have several BCP neighbors that I can think of off the top of my head. There are regulars in Dayton, Fallon, Carson City, Minden.
