If done as u describe stol, that works there. Lori's comments are that with that approach, u really haven't got much time to "shop" the strip or to watch for departing planes...most aren't as wise as u and tend to hog the center of the canyon, damn dangerous...
same goes for the departure as well. i like to go immediately to the right when taking off, and if able just to continue north to and thru the notch...depends whether i'm goin' to challis or mccall...!sometimes just turn left 180 in the bowl up high, head south then to mccall...not a big fan of the Lick creek departure...Ray A does it this way...
Lori's biggest thing all over is slow flight, and she is right. the dumb things i've done in the back-country usually have to do with my lack of speed control...i constantly have to work on it...your earlier idea of spiraling down seems to work for a lot of people as well, and like ice said set up a normal pattern with a short approach on either end. respectful of the house and such...those maule guys are good sticks!
