Re: 2012 Annual Summer Fly-in at Johnson Creek, ID

Back home......the last 30' got a little sporty. Pocatello ATIS was reporting 18 with gusts to 27 at a direct xwind bearing to my strip, nice and warm too at 88 degrees. So I opted for my heretofore never used xwind runway, 55 paces more like 40 usable after you clear the treeline. Plenty long as the rollout in the tall grass (luckily I had just made a few passes before leaving with the Kubota, but with the brushhog set as high as possible, the idea being I wanted to leave it long to assist in coming to a stop, a redneck trap system) was maybe 20 to 30'. But then the sideslope cocked me sideways a bit but by then I was fully stopped and problem solved. Most challenging landing of the trip but hey its always good to get home! Good seeing y'all, safe trip back.Image

what a great time! Landed back at my home airport at 10AM after taking off at 6AM MDT So 5 hrs including the fuel stop. For those that are bucking the headwind westbound I hope you have music to enjoy. I had 40-50kts in the face the whole way @ 10K and it was rough as hell at 8K. I'm sad to go back to work tomorrow :(

Home safe. Passed a 600 ft tall dust devil on my arrival!

Great flying. Great people. Great trip.

Here's a link to my JC pics, if anyone is interested. I ain't no fotographur, but I sure had fun.

Here are a few from yesterday pm and this morning.

Midfield at JC Saturday afternoon, looking north. Many additional planes parked behind me to the south as well.
Image

Departing JC this morning. 2 planes in front of me in the pattern, 2 off behind me, and 4 more taxiing for takeoff. I was very impressed with how well everyone communicated in the air all weekend, and never felt the least bit uncomfortable despite the number of planes in the sky.

Here's one I took this morning coming past Sulphur Creek Ranch.

Great weekend. Listening to them jam around the campfire last night (acoustic and electric guitars, with amps!) and watching Coyote Ugly kick up his heels with the pretty girls under the stars is a memory I will enjoy for a long time. =D> Can't wait to go back and do it again next year!

Made it back, in 6.1 hrs...kickin winds over the Sierras, 50+ Knots! I think emflys is still battling them...

Great meeting y'all and catching up with good friends. Thanks for a good time!

Wow, I'm sure glad I'm still here. Those winds don't sound fun at all. Hopefully we have some better luck whenever we decide to go home.

i agree with ranch pilot for sure, all of us seem to keep this pretty smoothe both coming and going...blasted early to challis to pick up friends and drop them at upper loon, nasty winds and a big load of people and stuff changed my mind on climb out...they are driving in and we'll pick them up at lower loon in a few days...nice evening and enjoyed listening to john mcknenna...he seems so right on...like the guy...coming across the desert to I.F. was torture for sure...full blast resulted in a whopping 120 kts...finally just pulled it back to save fuel and kill the heat, still got 110 kts...challis to I.F. was 1:10...thanks to you all, and thanks ROB for my cool shirt!

Re: 2012 Annual Summer Fly-in at Johnson Creek, ID

We made it home after a stop in Smiley Creek for breakfast. I'll echo the other comments about how smoothly things ran with that many planes. I won't complain about the 20-30 kts we bucked back to UT for 3 hours after hearing of you guys that went further with stronger winds. Great time with some great friends. Thanks everyone! Pics to come.

We made it back earlier today. Dave and Dee AKA M7flyer came back with me. Tomorrow Dave gets into his annual then we are going to do some local flying before he heads to socal. We found ourselves in the same area with Rick and Harley on the way back. Pretty bumpy.

Great to spend time with y'all.

Cheers...Rob

Glad you all had a great time! Trust me, I would have much better enjoyed myself hangin with you all. Even though our team had a great weekend in Birmingham, AL, it was too dang hot and muggy!!

I'm at least enjoying the pictures and trip reports!!

Re: 2012 Annual Summer Fly-in at Johnson Creek, ID

Great first visit. Almost felt too short - I wished I'd talked to more of you. Something for next year!

Filled up in Cascade and then headed south. I knew I was going to get it good and sure enough - constant light to moderate chop at 9500ft and 30-50kts on the nose all the way. Had to stop in Tonopah, NV and uplift some more fuel due to the headwinds. Landing was sporty, to say least - gusting to 34kts! Finally decided I'd rather live with the higher headwind than the chop, and went up to 11.500ft. Got cleared over Edwards AFB and came screaming over the hills into the LA basin, trying to lose some altitude.

6hrs to get home compared to 4,5hrs to get up....But such a trip!

Re: 2012 Annual Summer Fly-in at Johnson Creek, ID

Looks like winds through tomorrow for Blackrock to Truckee and beyond. There are still lenticulars above Honey Lake this PM.
All of this looks to progress north so wait if you can.
Avidflyer, remember the fields are there. Look for the cut fields lining up with the wind. I'll be out there somewhere monday and tuesday if you find need.
Glad the flyin was successful and I enjoyed the reports.

With only one camera, Dee was taking a video of everyone singing happy birthday to Adam. So, if anyone out there happened to get a still shot and wouldn't mind sending it to me, I'd appreciate it! Thanks. PM me and I'll get you my email address.

Back home this morning at 9AM..Kneel & I had to overnight at Cheyenne because of bad storms east & south of Cheyenne. Ed made it home around the storm after dropping Garry off at Greeley. Got our asses kicked all of the way home and smoke from the fires in UT, WY, and CO.
