I have been seriously considering a trip through BC to Whitehorse this summer. Stopping in at Atlin would be great. I'll mark my calendar!!!

Re: 2012 Atlin Floats and Wheels Flyin & Campin

I'm going to be up in that area with a few of my friends and we would love to join my fellow pilots. Is there any registration or is everything on a first come bassis. I flew all around there in a Lake Buccaneer 35 years ago. Will be interesting to see any changes to the glaciers.
Thank you for the invite,
Ken.....

Great to hear Ken  nope, no registration nor fees but once it gets closer, I'd like to get confirmation from everyone via e-mail, how many people/planes in your party so that we can have the area properly setup...the only cost associated to the event will be your hotel if you choose to do so but Atlin airport is Huge and plenty of room for hundreds (camping), your fuel and meals... We will have breakfasts and dinners on a donation basis to cover costs of food.. That's it. Great seminars and maybe, just maybe a SAR exercise. Cheers, BCT

Re: 2012 Atlin Floats and Wheels Flyin & Campin

Tying down at Atlin (CYSQ)

Well I thought I'd give sufficient notice for attending flyers to bring their own tie down system...allow me to plagiarized Oshkosh's notice:

"Airplanes should be tied down with equipment capable of withstanding sufficient tensile forces. The FAA recommends tiedown anchors for single-engine aircraft should each resist 3,000 pounds or 4,000 pounds for multi-engine aircraft. The weight alone of a multi-engine aircraft will not protect it from windstorm damage.

Several types of anchors are available for tiedowns. EAA does not recommend the "doggie ring" style that can quickly fail. The triangle-shaped top portion straightens under heavy loads and the anchor can easily be pulled from the ground. Screw-type tiedowns are also not recommended. Both the auger and spiral style loosen the surrounding dirt as they go into the ground, weakening their anchorage. Cable anchors (straight stakes with one helix at the end), however, make good tiedowns because of their length."

In my personal opinion, I was convinced by Abe's aviation system, either the 3 or 5 (5 is best) anchor system. I've seen them in used when John Lovelace had a fly in of over 60 aircrafts in Whitehorse couple years back and those planes did not move an inch.

In the event that you decide to purchase one of Abe's kits, make sure to mention that you're attending the Atlin Fly in...he might be extra nice to ya!

Re: 2012 Atlin Floats and Wheels Flyin & Campin

Interesting video. Of course I use the Jar's system the weakest of the ones tested when I am on wheels. :( On the Abe's system, I wish he would have shown how he drove the plates into the ground, did he hit what looked like a pin sticking out of the top or the plates themselves? Also, how difficult would they be to drive into hard, rocky ground? And finally, why was he pulling basically parallel to the ground? Not a realistic direction for tie downs? I think he said that his hoist wouldn't pull hard enough and I assume that was on a vertical direction.

Ford, (et.al)
I reckon there's no ONE system that will work in all situations. I'd say that Abe's (or similar) is good for unstable (wet, loose, sandy, sod) ground, and if you're fortunate enough to be on rocky ground, a set of skookum stakes would be best.
Just one more reason to never fly on wheels! :)

We are planning to go to Carcross, Whithorse, Watson Lake and Liard Hot Springs after the flyin. Does any one know if there is a strip real close to the Liard hot Springs.

I'll be working in and around Atlin, Yukon, and Alaska this summer and flying between jobs in my RV9. Hope to get a chance to stop in and meet some folks. Probably staying with friends over on Tagish Lake but will fly in for a day or two.

Ken there is a strip north of Liard hot springs but if my memory (from last summer) serves me well, it is approximately 5-10 miles away...you would need to hitchhike a ride to the springs or organize a pick up ahead of time with the hot springs lodge or Trapper Ray hotel beside the lodge. Let me know how that works out as I'd like to do it this summer as well. Cheers, J-M

Re: 2012 Atlin Floats and Wheels Flyin & Campin

Accomodations update for the Fly In for those not camping or those wanting to spend a night at the Atlin Inn hotel right on the lake:

Image

We have quoted a group rate for our rooms in the Inn and for the cabins that are still available:
room with single occupancy $98+tax
room with double occupancy $109+tax
Cabin #8 (2 bedrooms with double beds, kitchen and bathroom facilities, located by the lake - renovated) $125+tax per nite
Cabin #4, #10 (2 bedrooms with double beds, kitchen and bathroom facilities, located by the lake-rustic) $119+tax per nite

Our cancellation policy for the fly in weekend is as follows:

Any cancellation must be made before 4pm (local time)1 day prior to the date of arrival. However if they are unable to fly in due to bad weather we will allow the first nite cancellation to be waived. If the reservation continues for day 2 and 3 and they are
still unable to fly in there will be a 50% charge for each of those days. Due to the fact that it is the second busiest weekend of the year for us(the Atlin Arts and Music Fest which is held the next weekend is the busiest) we are hoping that the weather
co-operates and that cancellations will not be necessary. We are working on setting up our restaurant and waiting to have staff put in place before we open it up full time. However we will be having bar food available for lunch and supper during the
summer. If you have any further questions please contact me at 250-651-7546. You can also view us on atlininn.com.

With regards,

Edie Graf,
Atlin Inn Owner

Re: 2012 Atlin Floats and Wheels Flyin & Campin

I used to land regularly on the pad between the gas pumps and the bank by the road at the lodge across the bridge at Liard.
Also landed on the road then turned in to park adjacent north of the pumps.
Short walk to the hotsprings and electric to heat engine in the morning.
Now its another world and that might not be acceptable to the Mounties.

Re: 2012 Atlin Floats and Wheels Flyin & Campin

Here's what I plan to include in the next (March) edition of the BC Floatplane Ass'n. N-letter:

Atlin BC Fly-in June 30 – July 2 (extreme NW corner of BC)
First annual Atlin fly-in is this summer! Looks like a great agenda, and lots of parking, accommodations & food @ “The most beautiful place on earth”.
See: http://www.discoveratlin.com/
Read: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=8894
Interesting factoid: Atlin is the only BC town that you can’t drive to from BC
Have some good NEW stories to tell around the BCFA campfire @ 108Mi.
