The '17 Texas STOL Roundup

Yep, you read it correctly, we are moving the 2017 4th Annual Texas STOL Roundup from April to the first weekend in October.

Primary reason is weather. The spring rains have been tough on all of us but in particular on our Air Boss Jimmy Gist who, along with his wife Sally, are the persons who prep the runway for us - which is a ton of work. The frequent spring rains impede their job, making it even more time consuming. I was the lone standout on our executive team that did not want to move it from Spring to Fall, but it does take a team to make this happen so after much deliberation I agreed to the date change.

So the official dates for the 2017 4th Annual Texas STOL Roundup are September 29, 30 and October 1.

I have not updated the website nor our Facebook page yet because we are quite likely changing the venue as well due to completely filling up the Llano Airport last year to the point where we would have had a hard time parking a single other plane. Within the next few weeks we should have a final decision on venue.

If we have a venue change (again quite likely) we will put on an unofficial Texas STOL Roundup this October, kind of a dry run, so we can work out the logistics of the event, and so our venue providers can see first hand what we do and what support we need. This won’t be announced to the world, but just to those here and at SuperCub.org. All of you are welcome to join us for a fun time of unofficial competition and fellowship with existing and new friends. It will be a fun time for sure.

Re: 2017 Texas STOL Roundup Sept 29, 30, Oct 1

Big changes can definitely be aggravating, but I'm looking forward to the date change. My work schedule is insane in the spring with farming getting started for the year, so I've never gotten to do much other than make day trips to the Roundup. With the fall date I'll be able to enjoy the whole weekend since the crops will be harvested already.

Thanks for the update, hopefully it's beneficial to many others as well.

I'm in regardless, It has always been an awesome event, and I'm sure it will be regardless of location or time of the year.

I set a goal that Roundup 2017 would be my first fly-in with my Bearhawk. With this date change I might actually make it

I like it. More stable weather in the fall means higher chances of getting there without wx delays.

Dreaming here, but found the perfect permanent location haha. Leakey, TX airport grass strip and farm field (parking) is for sale, Frio River front property, and IMO the coolest airport in the Hill Country.

Here's some pics from flyin in there a week ago for a hunt down the road. Private grass runway is next to paved runway leased by county. This is also the second best area in TX to ride your favorite American made motorcycle, oh yeah!!!

The daytime temps in Texas even at the end of September are usually still close to 100 making the DA a big factor in performance. The last couple falls presented us with as much rain as we saw in the spring which could frustrate the date change, too. At any rate, we'll still be there!

Thanks for the update Phil and I hope AK is treating you well. We will adjust and embrace the change. Fall in TX is awesome anyway. Moderate temps come back without the Spring winds and rains. Jared at Ranger will be bummed as it will pull many of us away from his gathering. Thanks again to you and the Gist's and the whole team for keeping this event going. Llano Larry and crew will have some serious withdrawals over this. We will have to cheer them up. Take care!

Good point. Maybe a non-conflicting weekend could be considered.

That's also likely opening weekend of bow season...

Re: 2017 Texas STOL Roundup Sept 29, 30, Oct 1

Okay it's official we have changed the venue of the 2017 Texas STOL Roundup to Hondo Texas (KHDO).

A lot more info to follow, including updating the website. But the short explanation as to why we moved is because you wonderful folks filled the Llano Airport to capacity earlier this year. Hondo will give us room to grow this as big as it wants as it is a WW2 training base, tons of room. The city is very excited to have us.

Check out our Facebook page for a more in depth discussion by our Air Boss Jimmy Gist.

We've heard some folks are concerned about there being no grass runways at Hondo. Runways? We don't need no stinking runways! There is something like 65 acres of grass, that's where we will play and the city will help us build what we need. See you there!

Bearhawk @ 2017 Texas STOL Roundup Sept 29, 30, Oct 1

Yep, it's time to start talking about the largest gathering of backcountry aircraft, pilots, their families and visitors at the lower 48's premier STOL event.

I am excited to announce that once again Bearhawk Aircraft will be sponsoring the Texas STOL Roundup where they will be showcasing their latest aircraft kits and no doubt competing as well. Please be sure and take time to visit their website, and stop by and say thanks to them at the Roundup.

I'm penciling it in on the calendar, but this fall at work looks as busy as last year's was, which is unfortunate. I'd love to meet a bunch of folks, fly some fun and challenging competitions, and get a look at the new Bearhawk Bravo.
