3/3/11 Baja Bush Pilots Whales 11

I am signed up. I have never done a international border crossing and I wanted to do it with someone who has. That's why I signed up for this trip. Another pilot at Troutdale did this last year and couldn't say enough good. He is going again he had so much fun.

I thought some here might like this. Even thought I might drop in on floatflyer. I have an extra seat available. For the right person. Conservitive, guns, OHV type guy.
The trip is still open but they fill up every year so time is a factor.

I do alot of intl ferry flights, and have some greattips for you. You don't "need" another pilot. I can walk you through it over email or PM if you like. Its a bit of a hassle but not terrible unless you remember how it used to be.

Re: 3/3/11 Baja Bush Pilots Whales 11

I joined BBP a couple months ago and told myself if I sold the 150 I was going to do the 9 day run. Well I'm not going to make that one but I can for sure put something away for this one. If they don't get the fuel truck that is OK with me too. I have been wanting to go to Loreto because there is a hotel there that has probably the best steaks in the world. The restaurant is on top of the Hotel and they serve the steaks on a butcher block and I am serious they are the Best! Good fishing from Loreto too.

I might have an extra seat for someone that is light and can pack light. I should have around 200 lbs of useful load left if my friend goes, 365 if if they don't.

Re: 3/3/11 Baja Bush Pilots Whales 11

I've done that trip a couple times and it is a blast. The Bajabush pilots put on a well organized trip. although the border crossings are on your own you can look on their site for pretty good info on how to make it go smoothly. I haven't gone recently and haven't used the new eApis system yet so my info is pretty stale.

:D I can say there is no shortage of Margaritas on these trips :D

Re: 3/3/11 Baja Bush Pilots Whales 11

I can't belive you guys haven't left yet.

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) - The bodies of 15 men, all but one of them headless, were found on a street outside a shopping center in Acapulco on Saturday as police reported 27 people slain in the Pacific resort in less than a day.

The decapitated victims, all of whom appeared to be in their 20s, were discovered in an area not frequented by tourists.

Handwritten signs left with the bodies were signed by "El Chapo's People"- a reference to the Sinaloa cartel, headed by drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman- said Fernando Monreal Leyva, director of investigative police for Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located.

The narco-messages indicated the Sinaloa cartel killed them for trying to intrude on the gang's turf and extort residents. Authorities said there were at least three minors among the dead.

Mexico's drug cartels have increasingly taken to beheading their victims in a grisly show of force, but Saturday's discovery was the largest single group of decapitation victims found in recent years.

In 2008, a group of 12 decapitated bodies were piled outside the Yucatan state capital of Merida. The same year, nine headless men were discovered in the Guerrero state capital of Chilpancingo.

Acapulco has been the site of fierce battles between drug gangs, and this weekend got off to a bloody start with 27 people killed there from Friday evening to early Saturday, Leyva said.

The dead included two police officers cut down on a main bayside avenue in front of tourists and locals; six people who were shot dead and stuffed in a taxi, their hands and feet bound; and four others elsewhere in the city. Two police officers were wounded when armed men attacked a police post in the city's Emiliano Zapata district.

"We are coordinating with federal forces and local police to reinforce security in Acapulco and investigating to try to establish the motive and perpetrators of these incidents," Monreal said.

The wave of violence in one of Mexico's biggest resorts was condemned by the federal government.

"Reprehensible acts of violence such as these underscore the need to fight with determination against organized crime," a statement from the Interior Ministry said.

At least 30,196 people have died in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against cartels in late 2006.

Also Saturday, authorities said a small-town mayor was found dead in northern Mexico.

Saul Vara Rivera, mayor of the municipality of Zaragoza, was reported missing by family members Wednesday, Coahuila state prosecutors said in a statement. His bullet-ridden body was discovered Friday in neighboring Nuevo Leon state.

There were no immediate arrests.

At least a dozen mayors were killed nationwide last year in acts of intimidation attributed to drug gangs.

Re: 3/3/11 Baja Bush Pilots Whales 11

Sorry you have had bad experience 670x.
In recent months I have taken two Maules south of the border. One to 150nm south of Puerto Vallarta and the other through all the Central American countries to Panama. I've had a number of terrific Maule flights to Baja in the past
All the people I met were courteous and in some cases 'official' but never as discourteous as offialdom in the US.
The aircraft were never tampered with at the overnight stops and all were helpful and friendly.
There was no time a 'bribe' was asked for.
eAPIS is a bit of a nuisance but still acceptable once you understand it.
Food, hotels and cabs were all less money than here and that is a bonus.
Of course, as a visitor to someone else's country, learning a little of the language and culture goes a long way to mutual respect and future friends down there, plus adds to the fun factor as more doors are opened to us.
Have an excellent trip Rob, but leave the guns at home, the one in a thousand 'bad apple' will already have a bead on you,...just like here.

Re: 3/3/11 Baja Bush Pilots Whales 11

This really isn't new. About ten years ago, my brother and I rode down Baja and then took the ferry to Mazatlan. We were talking to one of the guys working at the hotel in Mazatlan about where was a good place to ride. He warned us not o go three blocks from the "Golden Zone" (where the big hotels are). He said 4 people had been killed in the last week and to be careful where we went. Even our AAA Map had an area on the way back that said "never stop in this area and never travel at night here".

I think the media just decided to make it news now. This has been going on forever and these guys being beheaded aren't tourists. Where do you think the pot here comes from and has since the 60's? It's big business.

How many people are killed in Chicago or LA every day? There are places you just don't go no matter where you are. They usually don't mess with the tourists. Without them a lot of these cities would be broke. Just use common sense and stay where the tourists are and you should be fine. That works everywhere not just Mexico.

All the more reason why I try and go where there are no tourists. Don't recall many people being beheaded up there.

Eaten by a bear now and then maybe, but shit does happen.

Yes Rob, leave the guns at home.

You'll need Mexican insurance, either on your own policy or through Baja Bush Pilots, preferably written in Spanish.

A good night stay going down is Jean, NV, the strip right by the Casino with cheap rooms and cheap gas. Another option is Imperial Valley right on the border, cheap motel next to airport. No cheap gas! Can walk to town for dinner.

We cross at Calexico and do Mexican customs at San Felipe. Cash only-this was just year ago! Make sure you are familiar with eApis and logged on. Most people file eApis for the return trip before they leave, if they know the day they are coming back. We typically file for Calexico at 12: This means leaving Mulege at 7, clearing at San Felipe on the way out. Calexico has a good restaurant on the field.

Then after customs at San Felipe, lunch is at Alfonsino's for Fish Tacos (watch for high tide as the water can creep up on the runway.) or Puenta San Francisco's. Do not land on the pavement there. It is very bad, it should be X'd off. Land on the dirt/sand.

After whales, fly over to Campo Rene (Bahia de Las Ballenas), taxi up into their compound, shut down, have lunch or dinner, hike to the ocean and collect 100+ sand dollars in under 30 minutes!!

If Jack doesn't have the fuel truck at Mulege, depending on your excursions, you might need to put in 5-10 gallons of car gas to make it to Loreto, (credit cards) for fuel to get you back to San Felipe. :)

Re: 3/3/11 Baja Bush Pilots Whales 11

I've been going to Mexico for over 40 years and the worst experience I ever had was a hangover. Well, I might have understated that, but it has mostly been very good. We used to land where the marina is now dredged at Cabo. It was really cool back then...kinda messed up now with all the development, people, etc. I have done dozens of boat deliveries to and from Mexico...the best summer I ever had was a winter in Baja.

Magdalena Bay, Scammons Lagoon, all great whale watching. There is good "blue crab" there, too. Down there where Float Flyer is, near where Bing Crosby had a "fishing camp". Saw John Wayne when he owned the "Wild Goose" in Cabo...no facilities or marinas, you had to anchor out beyond the surf. I still go down every year for fishing...if you want to fish in Loreto, let me know and I can make some recommendations. Lots of places the stop on the way down from San Felipe, LA Bay, SanFransisquito, Serinidad are some of my regulars.

Rob, you will have a blast! Just mind your P's and Q's (pints and quarts). BBP's has the outlines, be prepared, courteous...and you will be treated the same. If you attempt to speak some Spanish, it helps, too. Guns and Drugs will get you in trouble in Mexico.

I have been taking the smokers down in the last 10 years...so I can't help you with the border crossing info. The drug smugglers who steal airplanes like the "nose draggers", preferably Cessna 206, 210's. I think you are safe with a "tail draggin" Maule! You will have a blast. I have a new crane project coming up for the next 18 months...or I'd be going too!
