I flew into the Flying B on Friday and about 10 or 12 Super Cubs showed up just as I was trying to get out of there. I thought I was never going to get going. I flew back to S49 by way of Big Creek and yellow Pine and Johnson Creek airstrip. There were still a lot of aircraft parked there. Bob

Is the group dinner still on the agenda for Saturday night? If yes should we bring anything in any particular food category? Don't want to show up empty handed if that is the case.

Last week on Wednesday, by the time we got to JC at 11:45, it was already pretty bumpy and the wind, as usual, was blowing pretty strong. However, the next day, it didn't get warm/bumpy/windy until about 1:30pm so we got more flying in. Friday it was about the same as Thursday. We took off about noon and the sock was still limp and just a few bumps were starting to develope.

The forecasted temps are about identical for this week. For those of you not familiar with JC, once the wind starts blowing there (depending on your equipment) it can pretty much shut the flying down for the day until 6-7pm when it finally dies back down.

Anyway, we should have a good part of the day for flying. See you all up there in a few days!

If you are at Priest Lake, my grass strip is about half way to Johnson Creek.

Let me know if you would like to fly down with us. You can fly my wing.

Last year we brought some food for a Saturday night Pot-Luck dinner.
Is anyone else planning on doing that this year?

I asked the same question about Saturday nights dinner but so far no response. I'm just going to bring something like a pot luck!

Regarding the potluck: Last time I went, Strata and myself flew out to McCall and bagged some groceries for burgers, brats, etc.

If anyone wants to step up declare what they'd like to bring, that's fine. I like the idea of a BYOM to the center grill. That means we need chips, buns, condiments, accessories, etc.

It's all just an excuse to eat together, which we could accomplish any number of ways. It's also a good time to award the "furthest traveled" award!

BOM sounds like a good idea. I assume that the eat together will be Saturday. I am getting hungry just thinking about it.

GAME ON!!
I will be riding the river of smoke that seems to stretch all the way to Boise from NorCal. No pix of Tahoe this time - vis is 1 3/4 this morning.

Try to keep those bumps away until after I get there tomorrow afternoon. CYA there.

I'm lost
but I'm not afraid

Johnson Creek had their first crash for the season. A nose wheel aircraft type unknown made a to fast approach into Johnson creek today. No injuries ( very lucky) but he drove the nose wheel through the firewall and pretty much totaled the aircraft. A salvage company called the McCall mountain and canyon flying school for directions to the site of the crash landing. I flew in their 2 days ago with an instructor and there were just a few airplanes. Today other students & instructors reported heavy traffic.
After evaluating my personal limitations with 3 days of training I have decided it is a no-go for my limited experience. I will try again next year after I take the advanced course and some private time with an instructor. I admire the people with the experience who fly the canyon and mountains of Idaho. However be warned this is not something to take on lightly. There is a tremendous amount of knowledge and flying technique that is necessary in order to accomplish this type of flying with a margin of safety. IMHO No peer pressure would ever convince me otherwise.

I am sure that nobody is going to criticize your decision to abort going into JC if you have some doubts. In fact I respect that sort of decision making in a pilot. You have to get good at slow flight and these airstrips are not standard landing patterns. Sometimes you can't see the strip until you are coming from base to final (Big Creek). Practice until you feel confident and make it next year. If you could come in with someone else would that help? You could leave your plane in McCall and catch a ride in. Bob

Good idea. Seeing how it works first person is invaluable. Of course, you have to trust the nut you get in the plane with.

For the previous two Fly-Ins, I brought some appetizers for the Saturday evening Pot Luck and plan to this year again, as well as BYOM.

The truth will set you on the path to being free

Iv'e schedule a weekend in Haley, ID with one of the instructors to maintain the continuity of the slow flight. I also would like to keep the flyin as a goal to achieve myself. It would not be the same if i did not flyin my own aircraft.
BTW the locals have reported that the mosquito's are unusually active. So bring a net and plenty of repellent. Thanks for the support.

I got a late start and then bucked a headwind to McCall this morning, arrived around 12:30pm. Wind was picking up so we're staying the night here in town and headed over in the morning. Slow maneuvering in the rotors off the tops of those ridges didn't sound that appealing. :)

A Maule Yellow in color at Mahoney Creek had some damage on landing. I flew over to see if he needed help but after a circle the help plane called me to see if I was landing because he was there to help the Yellow Maule. I yielded the runway to him and went to the upper loon.

ZANE. Jr cub builder, Slick, John, Jack, ALex,
I sure was glad to meet you all at McCAll. Next year after some more training I will join you at the camp ground with the Green hornet. It was some flight home today. Turbulence, haze smoke with less than 6 miles of visibility. I used all the tools, flight following, Zoan -Garmin TIS, Garmin pink line nav.
Zane I owe you $15.00 bucks I ended up with 4 shirts and I only paid you for 3. Give me an address to send you a check. Tell your Dad, Joel I enjoyed meeting him as well. Tell Tom D I feel his pain and I hope he did not have to much damage.
Have fun
