Beers, Bears, and Chipmonks

Sounds like a bad song title to me. Anyway, thanks for the input - I won't worry about the anti-bear gear (RPGs, grenades, etc.), but I will bring enough rope to hang myself.... or was it the food? Whatever. I appreciate the local lore. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you lunatics...., er, I mean adventurers in person at JC. And I might even have some bears with me - or was that beers, now I'm confused again.

I gather from the asylum newsletter, er, I mean the forum, that people will be flying off to other places to eat, fish, etc. I bought Hanselman's Idaho book, and I would like to at least visit a few of the strips he listed there. Anything with an RHI of 3 or less will do, so maybe I can join in some of the aerial expeditions.

See you there.

Does anyone have some good advice or info on the fishing? I was thinking Cabin Creek, but am wondering if all the streams and rivers will be running too high and fast for good fishing?

I am planning to arrive Friday AM and going home sometime Sunday. First trip to the area and thought I would camp at JC and travel to breakfast and to fish, but otherwise be at JC. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Great advice, thanks.

I try to do plenty of homework before going anywhere for the first time and this is no exception.

What about the fishing? I am a trying to learn the art of fly fishing and would love to get some basic advice.

I have the gear, license, and basic skills. I am assuming that JC might not be the best place to fish and would like to see some other strips. Cabin Creek, Upper Loon, or Lower Loon if I really feel frisky. Just wondering if anyone has good info on a place with a decent chance for some fish?

I've been fly fishing since I was a kid so I guess I know a few things about casting and yes it is easy. I've fished Cabin Creek, Upper Loon, Johnson Creek, Landmark, Sulphur creek, Moose Creek, Shearer, Warm Springs,ThomAs Creek, Garden Valley, Dixie, Chamberlain, Cayuse Creek, And Atlanta. Now I am early this year and I usually go up there the last part of July so the stream flow may be a whole lot different as far as catching goes, but the better places among those are Cabin Creek, and Upper Loon. with Moose creek close. The bigger the stream the bigger the fish. Most are 12 to 17 inches and I've seen much larger ones, trout that is, as well as salmon. You can't fish for the salmon if they are running unless you're an indian. Don't get me started. You also can't annoy or harrass the salmon, Unless your an Indian. I'm leaving for JC on the 22nd at 0 dark thirty. Should be there sometime in the late afternoon. See you guys up there and looking forward to meeting everyone finally.....

I just noticed, while looking at the Flying B web cam that you can see the river in the background. I never noticed this before so I immagine most streams are rip roaring. The local Idahoans,(No offense) can probably give us a better idea of how swollen the streams are... Maybe Low&Slow will chime in. :)

Please do not plan to do any shooting around Johnson Creek airstrip. There are campgrounds north of the strip also. I also think that is private property.

The idea is not to disturb other people whether they are camped or are hiking. You can come back during hunting season.

Most people go to the backcountry to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet not listen to someone shooting off his gun. Go out to the desert if you must. I do all of my shooting during hunting season at animals.

Thanks

The fishing is not very good around Johnson Creek. Most people say that Cabin Creek has very good fishing.

I have never seen a bear at Johnson Creek but they are around. It is best not to leave too much food out although we have not yet had any problems. Most animals will stay away from people.

Most go over to Big Creek for breakfast.

It will be fun.

How about having a Yellow Pine Open? I'll even limp my way around the course and the purse could be a BCP shirt>>Spectators can yell "get in the hole" just like at Torrey Pines...Unless yelling around Yellow Pine is going to disturb the peace and solitude.... \:D/

Yes you can get clubs at the store. It's a nice little 18 hole par 3 typical of the area. Not what I or any other golfer are used to as far as obstacles go but very interesting. They have a variety of clubs from which you can choose and they even provide a sleeve of golf balls. By all means do not bring your own clubs as they have everything. The greens are well maintained and are a bit slow but it is fun in a yellow Pine sort of way...... \:D/ :-({|= No as far as the limping goes i was merely refering to Tigers limping around Torrey Pines, but I feel your pain...

Donknee

That is funny and quick on your part. The answer: Both if they are hungry.

JMTGT

I fought for and I support all Americans rights to own and carry firearms.
What I do not support is the few who abuse that right and bother other people with the noise and danger when it is not necessary.
Those few who are not very good and need continuous practice should do it either in a shooting range or somewhere far away from others.

You want to check that you are in a National Forest and what the rules on shooting are there. I believe much of the land around Johnson Creek is private but I could be in error.

Anyway the range at Garden Valley is wide open and usually not being used. It was only a suggestion and there were no problems or complaints 4 years ago when we did this at JC and we certainly didn't go shooting at everything out there. We set up targets and scouted out the area behind the impact site very carefully and so as not to upset anyone, I'm sorry I suggested it. I'm still in agreement with John though about our rights. I get a little tired of everything gun related to be evil > Think about it. Isn't it a bit like the General Aviation question about all those rich pilots.... "Well, I dont fly small planes so those guys shouldn't either". In this case, " Well I'm not a gun nut so they can't shoot theirs.." Anyway if JC is half as crowded as it is this weekend I wouldn't shoot anyway....THose Cubbies are almost as many as the 180's.

My goodness that's a lot of assumptions about jmtgt. I guess you could also say we should "not support" the way Sean Tucker flys his Challenger II because it is noisy and dangerous and perhaps he is one of " Those few who are not very good and need continuous practice."

My point is, I know jmtgt and saying he would bother or endanger anyone with his shooting is blatantly wrong and to assert that he is one of "Those few who are not very good and need continuous practice should do it either in a shooting range or somewhere far away from others" is downright laughable. I'm willing to bet John is the best pistol and rifle shot here at BCP and has received and given more training on firearm safety than the rest of us put together.

You may hang around people that need to be supervised, while shooting,,, I can tell you, jmtgt ain't one of 'em.

Oh, and by the way,,, if you really want to keep people safe, keep jmtgt off the Yellow Pine Golf Course... ;-)
