You asking for the US or Canada? They really dont have a mandate for Canada yet, so we dont know what is required and who will be required to have it yet...

Just a thought, but since Canada is the second nation as a whole to have legalized Cannabis (very progressive). Should you really have something automatically reporting how high you are?

I there is no mandate in Canada why are they telling us that 978UAT will not be legal in Canada

Because we are going with a satellite based system that only runs on the 1090 frequency. It sucks because we wont get weather and the added stuff that 978 offers. So while theres no mandate yet, they do know we are going satellite. Just not sure when it becomes mandatory, who needs it, if we need dual antennas (top and bottom) and so on.

So from what I'm hearing and reading the guys & gals noodling about below say 2500 agl (I sometimes get up there on wheels) and remaining outside of transponder mandatory airspace may well be able to avoid the whole ADSB thingy completely, is that a fair assessment ? In Canada thats is !!!

Possibly. But they are also talking about using ADS-B to replaced ELTs here. Not sure how that would work as theres no G switch so I'm not sure how they'd know if you crashed or not. But if they do go that way then everyone will need it...

I have not made a decision yet on ADSB. If Canada is going to require it everywhere then I will go with 1080. If not required everywhere then is there a route to Alaska through Canada that it will not be needed.
I wish Canada would figure it out and tell everybody what will be required and when

Why not just go with the 1080 specification; wouldn't that cover all eventualities, says the guy who is hoping to avoid it altogether !!!

1080 is a fair bit more expensive. But I'm hoping that with international requirement for 1080 that maybe some of these companies like skybeacon will make some affordable 1080 versions.

There seems to be a bit of a rush to get on board with ADSB. I am putting it off for a year as I can do a lot of flying where I live without it. I can get to Oregon Coast and Idaho. I have a son in Utah and a daughter in Seattle area that will be off limits. If Canada ends up with similar requirements as USA (not required everywhere) then that will influence what system and how much I spend.
Come on Canada make up your mind. Aslo will it be required in BAJA

Ah, so our policy makers went with the pricy one, great and they will like and some sort of user/access fee on top of it as well

Well having dual antennas add a fair bit of cost as well. Hopefully those of us in the boondocks won't need to fork it out though...

For me if they do/can make it serve a dual purpose as an emergency locator in some way as mentioned that would interest me. I don’t understand the hardware well enough to know the “how”, impact activation is required but how is for people that think well above my pay grade.

All of the GA world has recognized the benefit of tracking and most of us use one system or another. ADS-B should be around the 10 second interval mark, vs our current 2-2.5 minute. The advantage of satellite is that it works everywhere your current satellite tracking system works. The US system is ground based, so as you get down low in the mountains there is less chance of 100% tracking. So good luck with that. Weather info? I could care less, I fly what I see. A two hour old report is fine, I’m not cutting it that close. Most places I fly there are no other airplanes, so don’t need any extra eyes out the window help. Yeah, I’ll be one of the late to the party guys.

Just to clarify here it is 1090MHz....not 1080. As for which is best it's hard to say. I've equipped all of my planes with 1090 as that is the international standard and most countries seem uninterested in the 978mhz side of what we have in the states.
