Announcement re: Fravel 172 Tailwheel Conversion STC

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Will your tail spring/strut be adaptable/approved for the 170?
Thanks Gary

Hi Gary,

I can't say exactly. The new spring itself should work, and the forward bulkhead reinforcements could be trimmed to fit easily enough, but the welded mount fitting that attaches to the rear fuselage bulkhead (the heavy casting) may not fit right... only because the 170 part is not the same as the 172 part. I'm sorry I don't have a specific answer for you on that.

HOWEVER, when the time comes I'd be glad to work with any 170 owners to make up a custom version that will fit the 170 and help field approve it. Once my system is fully approved on the 172, then it would be a moderate battle instead of an epic battle.

I've been in Bills Hanger quite a few times ,and followed the Tail Wheel project quite closely from start to know. The amount of change he's done to the original Fravel 172 Conversion STC is night and day .I really like the heavy duty -thick robust parts -but lighter ! I'll be there to weigh the final product - have 2 182's set up to go for TW STC . GOOD LOOKING and well engineered .

Bill,
Glad to see that you a making progress on the TW conversion. Pictures you just posted do make it look quite robust.

Currently looking at trying to find an older 182 but just can't make up my mind if I really 'need' to go that route. My just convert the old 172 I have, timie will tell. My son is also looking for an irplane. We looked at a 175 that has an O-360 which would make a great candidate for the TW conversion. He just returned from Afganistan on Monday and stopped in to visit with me. We spent nearly every minute looking at various options for him to purchase and he knows he would prefer a TW.

Is there a range of serial numbers i should be watching for that supposedly came from the factory w the forward gear boxes? I heard somewhere that some 56-58s had them.

It is my very limited understanding that only the first few (3 or 4) 172's were built with tailwheel gear boxes as well as nosewheel gear boxes.

Since this is the thread for this project, I'll provide an update on the project, although not a very positive one:

1) The main landing gear and associated parts are ready for unofficial and official FAA drop tests. The mountings, adjustment shims, clamping parts, and related work is complete to this point.

2) The tailwheel strut, its associated mountings and related hardware are complet and ready for engineering approval.
:
3) For about the third time in three years, the Fravel 172 Tailwheel Conversion project is once again "on hold" waiting for funding. I apologize to all the interested parties for the repeated delays, but the next steps (drop testing) requires money that I cannot cut corners on. Despite the temptation, I have decided to NOT "take deposits", or take out a bank loan, or float an "investment opportunity!!!" because that always sinks the ship one way or another. In order to "Self-fund" the completion of the project and its FAA certification, I will be developing new (unrelated) products and STC's for much larger segments of the aviation market, and using the profits from those products and my existing product to refill the war chest for the taildragger program.

I can just see Kevin O'Leary sitting there staring at me with his fingers together, saying "you're a clever little cockroach but you have no sales and you THINK you have a tiny little profitable market where you can sell these conversion kits on the internet to bush pilots living in igloos in Alaska... you're dead to me !"

I figure 3/4 of BCP would be watching that show peeing in their pants...

Re: Announcement re: Fravel 172 Tailwheel Conversion STC

Hello all, I am not a computer forum post guy, but I just joined this group because I cannot find anything outside this forum on the Fravel tailwheel for the straight tail 172 (maybe not much of a computer guy period - still have a flip phone). Would like to find out the current status of the STC, and where I can get more info, i.e. purchase it. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Announcement re: Fravel 172 Tailwheel Conversion STC

no idea what happenes to the fravel, but if you are looking at a tailwheel conversion i would contact Dave at Stoots.
https://stootsaviation.com/tail-wheel-conversions.
much better product than the bolen converstion. Never saw many details on the fravel, but the stoots is solid. As with all things aircraft, bring $$$
