It is my
very limited understanding that only the first few (3 or 4) 172's were built with tailwheel gear boxes as well as nosewheel gear boxes.
Since this is the thread for this project, I'll provide an update on the project, although not a very positive one:
1) The main landing gear and associated parts are ready for unofficial and official FAA drop tests. The mountings, adjustment shims, clamping parts, and related work is complete to this point.
2) The tailwheel strut, its associated mountings and related hardware are complet and ready for engineering approval.
:
3) For about the third time in three years, the Fravel 172 Tailwheel Conversion project is once again "on hold" waiting for funding. I apologize to all the interested parties for the repeated delays, but the next steps (drop testing) requires money that I cannot cut corners on. Despite the temptation, I have decided to
NOT "take deposits", or take out a bank loan, or float an "investment opportunity!!!" because that always sinks the ship one way or another. In order to "Self-fund" the completion of the project and its FAA certification, I will be developing new (unrelated) products and STC's for much larger segments of the aviation market, and using the profits from those products and my existing product to refill the war chest for the taildragger program.
