Any Backcountry Pilots/Strips In The West/Central Texas Area

Hey all, I'm fairly new to backcountry flying and just purchased my first aircraft and i'm looking for other pilots in my area. I'm located at KSJT and just picked up a 2012 Carbon Cub SS. I don't really know anyone in my area that is into backcountry flying so i'm looking to find some like minded pilots from my area. I've got a ranch strip here where I live that i'd be willing to open up for backcountry pilots! Looking forward to enjoying the skies around Texas in a whole new way!

I’m based out of 8T8 on the west side of San Antonio with my 180. I moved here about a year ago and still haven’t found much for “backcountry flying”.

There’s a fly in at a nice looking grass strip T26 Flying V Ranch southwest of Houston this weekend I want to check out if the weather is good. http://www.texasstearmans.com/fly-in.html

Cedar Mills 3T0 is a nice grass strip on lake Texoma north of Dallas that I’ve camped at before, also walking distance to a marina with restaurant. http://cedarmills.com/airfield.htm

TE01 in east Texas has Critters Lodge they do a fly in a couple times a year that looks cool http://www.critterslodge.org/

Terlingua 1E2 in the big bend are looks like a cool dirt strip with a lodge and restaurant. https://terlinguaranch.com/

Reklaw 7TA7 in east Texas has a big fly in every year on a nice grass strip. http://www.reklawflyin.com/

Flying L is close to me. Do they welcome visitors?

There are some old military airstrips on the barrier islands along the gulf which have long been closed. If it were me I would go and ask forgiveness. One as I remember is near Port O'Connor. The state allows motorized travel on the beaches so why not an airplane. I think all those barrier islands have some potential

I’ve been looking at all of those as well. It would be awesome if one could legally land on the beaches out there.

I’m in Sterling City. Maule, Cub, big tires...
Look me up. If you’ve been in Angelo long, I wonder if we don’t already know each other?

For some reason the system won’t let me send a PM.

I'm up in Amarillo at 2TX0 and have a Rans S7 and 180. A buddy has a Supercub.

We play in the Palo Duro Canyon on a friends ranch. Dry creek beds and sand bars. Have 10-15 spots to land from easy 6-800' to better be on your game 200'.

PM me if you're ever up this way.

Hey BTV, you still have that S7, bet you have more fun in it than all your other planes.

Regarding Flying L....I’m on the good guy list..required a release be signed in conjunction with an EAA fly in...met the owner...Russ Luig...very nice guy who welcomed the Chapter and use of the field...might want to call them and sign the release...not much around there....

Howdy Karmutzen, I sold the S7 you rode in but missed it so bought another. Let me know if you get back down this way. Cheers

Hey again everyone. So i'm getting back into the cub game and we're making some improvements to the dirt strip we have out in San Angelo. If anyone is interested in swinging by and trying it out shoot me a PM! Also looking for more cool places to fly to so if anyone has any new suggestions in the area let me know! Hope to see some of y'all around!

Another vote for llano (KAQO), nice grass/dirt strip, apparently the military also has utilized it for practice before, lots of old cop car courtesy cars, and some REALLY good BBQ just down the way at coopers

Highly recommend

Re: Any Backcountry Pilots/Strips In The West/Central Texas

Wanted to revisit this thread and see if we've got any more folks flying out of West Central TX. I'd love to host a mini get together out at my place and meet some of the area pilots. Would love to find some more people to fly with out here!

This one is private but based on comments it seems they have visitors, and is RIGHT next to the ghost town

During my time in Del Rio, we used many of the oil/gas site pads as fun landing locations.

Lots of lonely two track roads/trails out west as well.
