2870’s or 2425’s how can you tell by photos?

2960. You can tell by the length behind the skeg and the tiny transoms. 2870 with an extra 18” or so added aft.

The "long tailed" Edo's are attractive looking floats, I'll let others comment on their functionality.

2960s work, but they make the pilot work. Those loooong tails are easy to drag, and provide massive drag if drug.

They just require different technique than most floats. The shorter 2870 floats are much easier to fly, but only the 2960 is approved on the 185.

Aerocet has destroyed the market for these floats, by replacing so many of these that the market is swamped with them.

What skywagon owner doesn’t just buy a new set of $125,000.00 aerocets amphibs or $60,000.00 straights lol

The price of those floats when the Aerocets first came out were far less than that. I don't know what their sales is like now, but I know a LOT of 2960s were replaced with Aerocet straight floats. And, you also have a fair number of later model Wip floats and PK 3000s out there as well, those also often replacing 2960s.

Price??? How many 182's have been re-engined with IO-550s and then equipped with amphibious floats? Useful load, anyone?

Certainly not in my price range, but they're out there.

Cesare Baj of the flying club at Lake Como, Italy, once posted on the old SPA forum about the lack of useful load on a 180 with amphibs that they used to have and said "I should not like to have one as a gift!" :)

Re: C 180-185 Floats for sale

My old 180 had 911lb useful load .could never really imagine putting that thing on amphibs . Living at 6000 Ft . It doesn’t really work . 185 turbo on edo 3500 amphibs .for awhile . Still kinda sucked up here if loaded up much .. need a really big lake . Or a super human who’s done it all and can make it all sing one way or another .

Yeah, but even at that you'd have to take a good look at them. A really good set of either EDO 2960s or CAP 3000s is only worth 5 or 6 thousand. If there's much of anything going on that's going to take many shop hours those floats won't be worth much.

Re: C 180-185 Floats for sale

What about edo 2790 amphibs?

I was going to do a little work to mine but if I can’t get a perfect set for nearly nothing I’d go that route and have a spare set…well because

Re: C 180-185 Floats for sale

I don't know about amphibs, never used them. I just know locally you can't throw a stick without hitting a set of old CAPs or EDOs for sale and a lot of them are in pretty good shape. Amphibs are maybe a little different story in that any older set is going to need some work, whether they've been parked or been on a plane until yesterday there are moving parts that need maintenance.

Re: C 180-185 Floats for sale

The 2790s have the same water handling characteristics as the 2960s which shouldn’t be a surprise, they’re just 2960s with landing gear added.

They restrict gross weight, and frankly, even at the reduced gross weight, the airplane is underfloated on them. So, it depends on what you plan to do with them. Big water or winds? Better have some pretty sharp skills, and really pay attention.

I never liked EDO’s nose gear retraction/extension mechanism on these. The nose gears are actuated via cables that operate from the main gear retraction motors. So, those cables run through fairleads on each of the forward float bulkheads. Flood one forward compartment and the rest will follow, though somewhat slowly.

But, if you really NEED amphibious floats……they work, and they hold up reasonably well. Typical maintenance required of any other amphibious float.

Re: C 180-185 Floats for sale

Been rocking the 2790s for a while, under floated for sure, for a working hauling plane not ideal, but for a 2 person pickup truck style flying, I like them, also nice to plan on 120kts cruise

Be nice to have aerocets, but I just don’t see $125k worth of better
