Yeah I knew that, but if you ever needed it out of my plane, you're welcome to it!

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 16: Rainy day, so a little slower paced. Souvenir shop on the spit in Homer, fish and chips for lunch, grocery shopping, laundry and the Ocean and Islands visitor center. We are thankful for another generous host so we are out of the rain and have wheels to get around

First order of business was to cover the plane since it was raining harder than forecast.
Image

Cleaning off all those bugs we've connected with some help from Mother Nature.
Image
Image

Shopping in the rain on the Homer spit.
Image

Tyler liked the sea otter. For $75, me not so much. Image

Fish and chips.
Image

Winding down the day in the motor home. Once again we had a good rain day because we had a place out of the rain and wheels to get around. We've been very fortunate on this trip to have great friends who have been generous hosts.
Image

On tap for tomorrow: headed back out to hopefully see some bears!

Looks like tons of fun. Glad you got such good weather most of your trip. Some years it's tough to fly around this place.

Thanks for sharing your pictures. We'd all be right there with you guys if we could!

Raining in the plane? Might need to follow up on that!

Yeah, I've not had this plane outside in the rain before this trip and discovered they need to be resealed when we were in Fairbanks. So, red neck plane cover for the rest of the trip when it's supposed to rain! All windows will get sealed when I get home!

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 17: Another awesome day! Glaciers around Homer in the morning and beaches for bear viewing in the afternoon! With some more info on where to go from my friend we are staying with, we headed farther out then we had gone earlier in the week to some other remote beaches. So many bears...and so much fun! What a great day of flying!

Glaciers south of Homer.

Stan got a pic of me landing on the beach.

Must be close. Fresh bear scat!

Bears!

Not as close as our bear guide friend is getting (like 10' today) but close enough for us. Mama bear spun around when we walked closer to the creek and one of the cubs stood up. That was cool. Zoom in and you might be able to see it.

Wolfs and bears.

The kids had fun finding seashells and dead crabs on the beach.

I love the braided rivers.

It was a beautiful evening flight back to Homer.

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 18: A change of pace and we spent the day fishing out of Homer with a AKGreg, who has a boat down here. Adam was the big winner with his King Salmon catch. While the fish weren't biting liked we hoped, we still had a great time. A huge thanks to Greg for taking his time to take us out and give the kids, and is, this experience!

Heading to the boat slip.

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 19: Happy birthday Adam! It was a reposition day to prep for going home. AKGreg invited us up to his house in Soldotna so we could grill the King Salmon Adam caught. So, we all are in beds tonight and the planes are tucked away in a new hangar. We had a really nice afternoon/evening visiting with him and his wife and had an awesome salmon dinner with them... followed by cake and ice cream for Adam's birthday.

Unfortunately, we are going to start heading home tomorrow. Nizina, it doesn't look like we will be making it to the Wrangel/St. Elias area...which I'm really disappointed about. I really wanted to see that country and drop in to meet you.

Ben and all the others on the Kenai and Anchorage area, I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to meet up.

Adam has had a lot of birthdays on our summer trips.

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

There is nothing better than eating fresh king salmon caught by akgreg, cooked by akgreg, and keeping your plane(s) in a hangar built by akgreg. Believe me, I know.

Bummer about skipping the Wrangells. I experience the Kenai Peninsula on a daily basis as a resident and absolutely love it, but I find every excuse to fly to the Wrangells whenever I have time off. I guess you will need to come back :)

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Don't feel badly about not seeing everything--we lived in Alaska for 3 years, traveled about everywhere we could out of Anchorage in our motorhome, and didn't begin to see everything I would have liked to see. Without the family, I got to see Shemya (thrilling????) and Barrow (really very interesting) and Cold Bay (different!!!), courtesy Uncle Sam. After I passed my private checkride in February 73, we did a little flying here and there, but I left the USAF only 3 months later, so not nearly as much as we would have liked to--and of course, as a brand new newbie, I was reluctant to get too carried away going places.

So you'll have more chances, and if you've enjoyed your trip as much as I and many others have enjoyed reading about it and seeing your pictures, you'll go back. =D>

Sure was great to meet all of you. I think your kids dang near broke my dog. Drake has been pretty much on his bed all day. Very tired from all the playing. Safe travels home.

Haha! Sorry about that. My kids loved playing with him. Thanks again so much for everything. We've met so many gracious people on this trip that have made it an incredible trip...you and your wife included.

FYI...we were able to sneak through all the passes and really laid down the miles. Made it to Whitehorse.
