Thanks guys. Almost to Mackenzie. Weather is looking great for the trench! Nice tailwind and 4G!

Making good progress, I see. Yesterday most of the time it showed 130 mph, right now showing 140...sounds fast to a Tripacer guy...

Yeah, we had good tailwinds up the trench. Update to follow. In Whitehorse for lunch and to resupply.

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 3: No wifi last night so I'm updating today from Whitehorse. Amazing day flying up the trench! Bucket list item checked!! We met Vicki in MacKenzie, had ice cream, had a scare with Tyler, flew 340+ miles through a big ditch called the trench, and camped by the lake and gazebo at Watson Lake in the Yukon!

Breakfast at Quesnel.

We had a scare. Tyler got ran over by our plane when he tried to help push the plane. He managed to get both feet pinned, one behind the wheel and the other in front, essentially chocking it with one leg/ankle twisted. We could roll it forward or backwards. And we had just fueled so the plane was around 3,000#. Allen and I got in and lifted the one strut and budged it just enough to free one foot. Luckily he is ok.

The trench! Bucket list checked! Smooth ride for the first half, really bumpy the last hour and Sadie got sick but avoided making a mess.

Awesome! Glad Tyler is still smiling. The ice cream probably helped.

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

I'm guessing that the ice cream did more good than the ice on his foot! Poor kid--just trying to be helpful, and look what it got him!

Gosh, your pics are making me want to do that before I get too old!

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Must have just missed you in Whitehorse this morning, I came through about 9 enroute Dawson. Lucky your route had only a few bumps, mine was bumpy all the way: Abbotsford, Smithers, Dease Lake. An old-timer in a trick SuperCub on 35's at the Whitehorse pumps said there's only 3 reliable airports for fuel - Whitehorse, Dawson, and Watson Lake. The other pissoff are airports like Smithers that only have truck fuel but won't fill your jugs. But they'll wait patiently while you siphon out a just filled tank and then refill it for you????

I've never been unable to get fuel at our airport in Atlin in the past 10 summers (winters, I don't know). Might take a while for a traveler since there is no attendant, but I have a key and an account now.....

Yes, Smithers is a pain with truck fuel only during business hours unless you want to pay a callout fee.

Camped overnight in Atlin, on the grass by a tied-down SuperCub with a pod. Walked around and couldn't find anyone, not even Jamie the Tundra helicopter guy. Had enough gas to get to Whitehorse so didn't pursue it further. Not easy for a transient traveller.

He actually ate a little and then pushed it aside and started to cry some more. Definitely a sign that he was really hurt. He's been fine today though and back to normal, thank goodness.

We are sitting here at Beaver Creek. Not a horrible spot to camp but it worked out well logistically!

Making great time! Looks like you got through just in time, rainfall warnings all over in my area starting tonight.
Hope Tylers leg gets better.

Man, what a trip! Your wife is a trooper! I showed this to my wife and she said she wouldn't do it in the Citation! My kids are a little older though and not as fun as they were when they were little. Maybe that's the problem. :D

Thanks for posting all this stuff. Great to live vicariously through you. Good luck!

Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 4: Right on track. We've had great weather and tailwinds the last few days. After breakfast and breaking camp, we left Watson Lake. The wind blew all night and was still blowing so we thought it would be rough. Ended up being not so bad. Landed in Whitehorse to eat lunch, fuel, and resupply. Walked down to town and taxied back with groceries. Next stop Beaver Creek, 5 miles from the AK border!

Walking down to Whitehorse from the airport.

Re: Grassstrippilot & Family: North to Alaska!

Day 5: Alaska! Got up early, fine tuned our border crossing info (they couldn't find either of the eApis filings I'd done) and launched for Northway. Easy, no hassle clearing of customs, a quick visit to the flight service station for a briefing and some drinks/snacks (so cool to get an in person briefing. We've lost a lot down south.), then over to Tok for fuel. Made Fairbanks by mid day. Awesome camp grounds and friendly airport staff. So many cool planes! A bike ride to get a rental car (death defying experience!), a run to the grocery store, the Santa Claus house, and dinner. Tomorrow some sightseeing!

Breakfast before departing Beaver Creek.
Image

Alaska!
Image

And still not all our gear. Add in two tables, a food box, a cooler, shotgun, a snack bag and entertainment bag and a dozen other misc things. I'm continually impressed with the performance of the 205!
Image

Fairbanks campgrounds and staff are awesome! We haven't been there long when the airport manager came by to see if we had all we needed.
Image
Image

Allen and I braving the traffic to go get our rental cars. A bit dicey along the expressway!
Image

Santa Clause house at North Pole. Funny how the kids all of a sudden went to best behavior!
Image

It was hot here today. I saw 89 on the car temp. So eating out seemed right.
Image

Home for the next few days.
