He had a mild concussion and was out for a couple minutes before getting an ambulance ride to the ER but will be OK. His helmet, not so much.

With that in mind, I've thought about helmets before but never bought one. I'm rethinking that now. I fly a 180 with BAS harnesses and try to be gentle with it, but stuff happens. I already wear a survival vest on every flight so clearly I'm not worried about style points. Anyone have some recent opinions on specific helmets?

Seems like the Pro-Tec half-shell line (https://www.protechelmet.com/products.asp?cat=14) is a lot bang for the buck, but how much better in terms of fit/protection is something like the Bonehead Pilot X?

Thanks!

Glad your kid is ok.

I'd like a helmet but don't have one yet. The Wendy looks like a good option but I want one that keeps the headset intact. I thought the Pro-tec half-shell looked like a good option and tried to buy one twice. The first time I canceled the order after 6 months and no delivery. They said it never shipped because it wasn't a government agency order. They had no problem charging my credit card though. The second time I used a friends wildland firefighter credentials for Helitack. They charged my card but never shipped and claimed they never received the order so no refund. I guess that's what I get for trying to sneak one past them.

Re: Helmet Purchased. Time to get yours

I have my helmet set-up complete. Flew with it for the first time today.

It’s a Team Wendy EXFIL SAR Backcountry with Peltor headset mounts. It was purchased directly from Team Wendy. I bought a used Peltor 7000 Pro GT headset off eBay, as I didn’t want to get too much money into this if I hated wearing it. I only paid $75 and it showed up in excellent shape.

The ear cups mounted directly to the Peltor helmet mounts, no adaptors needed.

I only flew 45 minutes with it, but in that time it was comfortable. The headset worked great and is at least as quiet as the DC 13S I normally use.

This preachy thread title pisses me off every time I see it. A lot of us have had helmets for a long time and don't need Kevin presuming to tell us to go out and follow his self-righteous example.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving, and yeah, if you don't happen to have a helmet, then at least give it some serious thought.

More than anything, this thread galvanizes my dislike of Tapatalk, given that OP's linked image URLs are dead.

Use the BCP gallery or forum file attachments if possible for posterity. They're all still alive.

Yeah, it's hard to take safety advice from a 50-something guy who rides a OneWheel! :D

But does he wear a helmet when riding it? :?:

Maybe a helmet would have prevented this: (Very Graphic Picture!!) Picture is at 33:04 or so after the actual crash video in this clip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueXqSZZnjbA)

No, unfortunately I think he would have still crashed.

I like my visor a lot. Sunglasses are nice if you are into the sun for a long time but if it is just for a turn on final the visor works fine. DENNY
