3 kids is plenty for me. I was thinking the Bonehead helmets but it does make more sense to buy the ProTec for the kids. There is lots of exposed steel tubing in my airplane so head trauma is something I've been think a lot about.

How about shoulder harness's in the back? How much to put them in? It all adds up!!
Like said on Robs post, the most dangerous part of the flight is driving to and from the airport!!!
Most of us fly a little more conservative with others on board.
Somewhere we make the decision of risk assessment of if it is worth if for each of us?

Re: Helmet Purchased. Time to get yours

Here's my helmet story: 7 days ago I ran into an unseen electric fence wire strung across the dirt road that runs behind my place. I was going for a quick mountain bike ride, and really wasn't looking for the wire as I had just gone over a cattle guard. Anyway, after going over the handlebars at about 30 and landing on some rocks, once I limped home and mostly got the bleeding stopped (I got my ASS KICKED), I looked over my heretofore pristine helmet. While I don't know if I'd say it saved my life, it probably save me from some pretty good scrapes and I have enough of those right now. This had nothing to do with it be a e powered bike BTW, good old gravity was enough, I was coasting. One last thing, since this was a short local ride, I almost didn't wear my helmet.

GT, I'll have 4-point belts installed for all seats in my plane. You are right, it all adds up and good restraints are one easy thing that could be a life saver.

Only if you are flying United.

For us, the flight is about ten times more dangerous than the drive if we aren't doing off airport.

For off airport good data is harder to come by, but is probably in the neighborhood of 50 times more dangerous than the drive (or five times more dangerous than flying a 172 from paved airport A to paved airport B).

Best post.

Airbags seem to cost about $2500 a seat.

Any reasons why helmets are specifically associated with tandems in the list, though?

Because your head is inches away from the tubes in a Cub and that's what gets a lot of folks.

Every flight in the Rans and the cub before that. If there's a choice between wearing a helmet and my wife wiping my ass for me the rest of my life because I didn't wear it, it's going on. Twice.

PT A-Bravo Half-Shell. Comfortably and functionally fits DC's, Bose & Lightspeed. $61

Good topic. Timely. I bought one of the PT's. It wasn't comfortable. After a short while it gave me a headache. The Bonehead product looks good. Kevin, did you experience any 'hot spots' after wearing it for a few hours several days running? Does it have ventilation for hot weather flying? Thanks again for the topic.

"BY FAR THE #1 PLACE YOU SHOULD WEAR A HELMET IS YOUR CAR!!!!!

Remember the most dangerous part of flying is the drive to the airport. I want to see pictures of our new parent pilots with the whole family helmeted up for the drive to the airport and the flight. "

It's interesting how this myth has persisted through decades of statistics. Flying GA is about as safe as riding a motor cycle without a helmet. Sad, but that's life. :(

Re: Helmet Purchased. Time to get yours

I wear my helmet (Northwall LMT-Medic w/Bose A20) every flight. My plane, friends planes, doesn't matter. It just part of my routine and I feel naked without it. Bought my wife one at the same time and it fits most people who hop in the plane......except for Zane and his overly large pumpkin. My safety/survival/vest is also worn every flight. I have those for passengers as well. It may not seem important to some of you, but it is to me. I hate regrets.

I have one of those too. Works over the headset. It's pretty comfortable. I give it to the back seater.

It's the helmet I'm wearing in my post on the first page. It's okay. The price is right.

It feels like it's sitting atop your head rather than wrapping around your head, which I'm not fond of. I'd rather have a helmet that grips the base of my skull a little better. Although, like I said, I soon forget I'm wearing it which is good.

I thought you said it's a Sport Link Detach?
Or is that something that fits onto/into a Pro Con helmet?

It is a Sport Link Detach. There's some creative labeling and reselling going on there, not sure who is who. Perhaps some Googling could get to the bottom of it.

Re: Helmet Purchased. Time to get yours

Can anyone comment on the headroom reduction (helmet top thickness) of the Bonehead helmets?

I'm 6'3" but mostly torso so have headroom challenges in many aircraft. It probably makes it that much more important to wear a helmet being in close proximity to overhead structure, but wearing a helmet that is constantly banging against things is annoying.

I bought this helmet a few years ago when my brother and I flew his fresh out of phase 1 S6S from Chevak to Anchorage when he moved out of the village. It is even less expensive than the PT a-bravo, but fits me great with a good amount of coverage and is not bulky. I wear my halo headset (love it) underneath it and it works great.

Re: Helmet Purchased. Time to get yours

The Bonehead PilotX helmet is very low profile, if you call them they will give you the exact measurements. Their newest helmet with the integrated visor is bigger, although from what I saw at Oshkosh didn't look too much bigger.

Re: Helmet Purchased. Time to get yours

Helmet fit is obviously subjective to the shape of your head. Round, oval, semi-oval, It's important to find the one that works for your gourd. All manufacturers are different.

I fly all the time with a helmet at work. This is a good spur to get a helmet figured out for the family bird.
