In my line of work we wear these protech's with NVG's and Bose A20's. Everything fits fine and it offers protection over nothing. Maybe something to consider if you already have an ANR you like

Thanks for that info. I won't fly without my Bose A20's.

Re: Helmet Purchased. Time to get yours

Hi,

I'm Naomi and I own Bonehead along with Chris Frisella. Long-time lurker and thought I'd join to answer a couple of the questions posed here.

First, I hope your friend has a speedy recovery - that's a pretty nasty one!

Open cockpit - we have several open-cockpit pilots wearing our helmets, though in an open cockpit I would recommend going with ANR. The helmets all come pre-wired for CEPs, which can be used with the helmet both with and without ANR. With the ear buds in coupled with the ear cups and helmet on, you'll be amazed...

Liner system - the liners are removable, washable and adjustable. For the PilotX, small thru large is one shell and XL and XXL are another. The liners can be easily adjusted by adding and removing foam shims (which will also conform to your head after a few uses). The ear cups are also adjustable via screws on the side of the helmet, so the helmet can be easily resized within the sizes of its shell. The Aries is one shell sizes ad currently does not accommodate XXL.

There are a lot of configuration options and customization we can do for our helmets, so feel free to call/email if you have any questions at all.

And thank you to our Boneheads out there referring your friends - it's much appreciated!

Re: Helmet Purchased. Time to get yours

I just ordered a Protec to see if I like wearing one.

I am a bit of a helmet resistor. I always wear one on my dirt bikes or bicycles, but do not skiing. I get a lot of flack for this, but as my buddy says, skiing is not a contact sport.

I would be interested to hear peoples actual use: do you wear it all the time, some of the time, only when your off-airport???

I'm like you. I don't wear one snowboarding, but always do on my snowmobile.
Asked my wife if I could buy a helmet and her first response was "what about me"... My argument that I don't generally do things requiring a helmet when she is along did not go over well.

$61...... pretty hard to use "too expensive" as an excuse with options like this.

I don't think any of us should think of it this way, as distinguishing certain flying activities from others when determining if you should wear your helmet. We often get slapped the hardest when our guard is down. Wear it every flight and make it a part of your gear. I often forget I'm wearing it.

So Z, you buying flying helmets for your family?

I've been thinking about this because I want to wear a helmet while flying so that means I need helmets for my wife and kids...right? That's $5k in helmets. I think I just priced myself right out of flying.

Does not giving my family helmets mean that I can't wear one? No. Cruel, perhaps, but to go without because I don't equip the whole family would be illogical.

I fly with some buddies and I don't give them a helmet. Now, the wife...that could prove more difficult.

Good to know, I have the same helmet and bose X. I'll try that out and maybe start wearing it in the cockpit.

I agree Zane. I would wear it all the time. That said, I am still more at risk when I'm put playing on river bars solo then flying pavement to pavement with the family on board.

I never wear a helmet on a horse. For me, a good hat is rain and sun protection that a helmet just can not offer. And when you are packing in the mountains and only have so much room, you can't afford to have rain running down your neck.
I still would like to wear a helmet flying though.
$61 for a helmet is a great price. But what is it actually made to do? I don't wear a skateboarding helmet when I dirt bike or snowmobile, it would not help much. So shouldn't we wear an actual flying helmet for flying? Is that cheap helmet made to take a 60+mph whack onto a steel tube?

Re: Helmet Purchased. Time to get yours

I survived my whole life with no bike helmet, no skiing helmet, intermittent quad helmet, intermittent motorcycle helmet, no mountain climbing helmet.

I wear helmets most but not all of the time when riding my motorcycles, quad, snowmobile. I wore a helmet for 33 years in the fire service.

After 33 years in the fire service I can tell you helmets do work.

BY FAR THE #1 PLACE YOU SHOULD WEAR A HELMET IS YOUR CAR!!!!!

Remember the most dangerous part of flying is the drive to the airport. I want to see pictures of our new parent pilots with the whole family helmeted up for the drive to the airport and the flight.

If you look at every minute of your life where a helmet could save your life flying is a minuscule part. But if you want to wear one more power to you.

3 kids is plenty for me. I was thinking the Bonehead helmets but it does make more sense to buy the ProTec for the kids. There is lots of exposed steel tubing in my airplane so head trauma is something I've been think a lot about.
