Re: 4th Annual High Sierra Fly-in Oct 24-27

This sounds like fun and I have the time off. Can someone post or PM me the lat/long of the lake bed for some flight planning?

Got this on the calendar and if the weather cooperates, will be there. Looking forward to it!

Same here, Brent! Maybe we can coordinate our flights down there. I'll check in with you as we get closer.

This is going to be fun! Only 5 weeks out! Cool watching the Bearhawk video landing at some of the Fly-in spots.

Re: 4th Annual High Sierra Fly-in Oct 24-27

HAZARD WARNING - While Grassstripilot and I were trading PM's, I was reminded I wanted to post this warning for all attending.

I would consider the greater area we will be flying in a TRE. What is a TRE you ask? A Tower Rich Environment! There are bunches of them on the ridges between the lake bed and Reno for instance and others liberally scattered around. Now having said that, as far as I know, the routes Kevin uses between landing spots are clear of them. However keep your eyes peeled as we all know how quickly they can pop up. Nevada still allows unlighted galvanized towers if shorter than 200ft agl.

I'm speaking from personal experience here. Not long after liftoff from fueling in Yerrington, I was about 300ft agl on the edge of farmland and had a painted, lit, and charted tower pass off my right wing. Yes, it scared the crap out of me! I didn't see it until the last second - it blended into the clutter very well. Shame on me for not being more aware! That tower is about 3 minutes East of the lake bed and 3 minutes North of Yerrington's airport.

Be vigilant, be safe!!!

Re: 4th Annual High Sierra Fly-in Oct 24-27

Yikes! That is scary, Mike.

I heard a horror story the other day about a Beech 18 that had several feet of wing trimmed by the guywire of a tower, so while I think the main tower itself is avoidable if you see it in time, the guywires, if there are any, are invisible and can swat you out of the sky even more readily... LIke a cheesecutter.

My community flies very low, often in urban environments. A pretty good rule of thumb we use is the distance of the height of the tower from the base is about as far as you'll see wires on most of them.

Stay alert, stay alive!

I really want to try to make this too. Trying to protect my calendar space. And, watching the weather.
