How to make throttle smoother?

I am loving my Pponk, never expected some much increase in speed and climb.
Its cruising 20 to 25 MPH faster than before,I was expecting 10 mph or so.

Something did I need to do is make the throttle smoother, specially the lower powers settings its a bit harsh, to fly slow and precise fighting a harsh throttle is not very helpful, we put a new cable, and here are pics of the routing.

Any tips on how to make it smoother? Seems to be the initial resistance is what makes it harsh, is moving the carb arm down a possible solution?

Have someone watch the curve in the cable housing to see if it moves. You may need to immobilize it. You need to move the throttle as necessary. It is an important control in slow, power pitch approaches. We are better when we move. Hover taxi is the safe place to test smooth throttle movement at slow speed.

Hola,

I had good luck with McFarland cables; decidedly smoother.

Nice to see your increased speed although you are cheating using mph; knots sound better but smaller; LOL.

Best,

Re: How to make throttle smoother?

I’ve had similar issues to what Contact described in my Cub, the cable would bind when initially moving the throttle and make it real inconsistent at low power settings. A few adel clamps solved the problem.

Re: How to make throttle smoother?

Funny thing, I had the same sort of issue when I first got my 180-
hard to make smooth small throttle adjustments when landing.
One day I got in and jacked the throttle and realized that it was STIFF!
Installed a new throttle cable and everything was fine.

Check your rod end bearing. It may be gummed up and not move freely.

Is that photo taken with the throttle in the idle position?
At idle, the arm on my carb is more "up" than yours.

I'd look at the angle of that throttle arm in both the idle and WFO position,
and think about how that effects leverage and therefore ease & smoothness of operation.

repost from beechtalk:

You need a small washer an960 under the big washer an970. You might need a an960 in between the throttle arm and the gimble also.

Re: How to make throttle smoother?

In the picture above, the position of the throttle arm on the carb is just about wide open on my 470K. My carb is closer to the firewall and the cable is clamped right behind the left rear motor mount bracket on the plate where the fuel pump would go on an injected engine-----about 8 inches above the throttle arm.

My K engine also has a similar clamp.

Re: How to make throttle smoother?

Like anything else, there are cables and then there are cables. Just because it's a new cable doesn't mean it's perfectly made or lubed correctly. But I do think that the more you can restrict the sheath's movement, the smoother it will be--and a little thin lube wouldn't hurt. I'm sure there's an FAA approved lube, but what I've used on my boat's control cables is ATF--thin, never gummy, and really lubes well.
