hubcaps

My 180 has a set of dished style hubcaps, but I'm thinking I like the flat ones better.
My C150/150TD had a set of dished caps, but my old C170 had flatties.
They were of the home-made variety though.
Does anyone know of a source for flat hubcaps to fit the Cleveland 6" wheel,
or will I have to make them myself?

Have you looked at these from LoPresti? http://www.loprestiaviation.com/hubba-hubba-cap.html

Re: hubcaps

I agree. I doubt they do much to add speed vs these hubcaps at $50/pair,

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/l ... Hubcap.php

and the $188 difference seems like a lot to pay just so you don't have to remove three screws when you wanna air up your tires.

Re: hubc aps

The flat ones you are looking for are advertised on ebay for $37 (I think). They are primed with holes drilled. I found them listed under Cessna 172. Even that seems a high price for what they are, but they are as advertised ( I bought a pair).

Re: hubcaps

I just took lexan and made my own. Keeps all the dirt out and allows for quick viewing to make sure all is well.
Can't really even tell they are there. I also made a set for my ski setup.

Re: hubc aps

Found em, $33.75 incl shipping.
Like you said, too much for what they are,
but since I don't have any suitable material handy to make a set I might go for it.

Re: hubcaps

I've had good luck with those same ones from ebay - came with stainless steel screws, lock washers and primed for paint.

Re: hubcaps

The problem with hubcaps is they make it just a bit harder to check tire pressures. I run relatively low tire pressures, and as a consequence, I remove hubcaps and leave them in the hangar.

These ain't 54 Chevys after all. 8)

Re: hubcaps

Three screws & the hubcap comes off.
Takes me about 30 seconds.

Re: hubcaps

I think you can buy small sheets of aluminum at Home Depot. A pair of tin snips, drill three holes and paint. shouldn't cost too much, I would think.

Re: hubcaps

I'm curious, are you wanting hubcaps for looks, speed gain, or??

I don't have hubcaps on my 182, and I've never really thought about it.

You're saying that you can pull six screws, remove the two hubcaps, and reinstall in 30 seconds? Really?

So, how often do you actually do so?

What benefit are these things anyway?

Re: hubcaps

I doubt like hell that hubcaps do much aerodynamically speaking for airplanes like ours, with antennas struts & big tires hanging out all over, but I do think they clean up the looks.
Just trying to pimp out my ride is all.

And no Mike, that 30 seconds was per side, per operation.
So call me a liar-- that makes it a whole two minute for R&R on both sides
I'm retired so it doesn't bother me taking all that extra time once a month or so.

Re: hubcaps

One of the features that I like about my 185 is that it simply forces its way through the air. No fairings, fibreglass cowl, wheel pants, etc. There's always a bit of grease that leaks past the felt seals from the wheel bearings. It's a bit messy, and hard to thoroughly clean inside the wheel casting. For that reason, I keep the factory hub caps installed. Still running the original McCauleys, but will spend even more time on amphibs this year.

Aerocet has nice oil bath wheels with lip seals now. Too bad nobody has come up with a viable lip seal for all our McCauleys and Clevelands.

Hot Rod
If you give me a week or so I'll send you a set that came off my 170 . For free, 6 in cleavelands 3 screws hold them on. I think I still have them. They are down in my hanger 30 miles away .

Re: hubcaps

Sorry for the little thread drift but since Pinecone ask, there are rubber seals available for the Clevelands normally found on Skywagons and also those found on most other Cessnas. Cleveland Product Reference Memo PRM95 (page 10 for 40-75D and 40-75T plus others) calls for the replacement of the felt seals with rubber lip type seals part number 154-12400 (outboard, rides against ring part number 153-0300 used with the felt seal) and 154-12000 (inboard). Just a log entry for the change per the memo. Current kits use the rubber seals. One more reason to switch to clevelands :) .
