Not my cup of tea, but interesting nonetheless.

Re: Lightest yet folding e bike?

If I'm not mistaken, that bike was listed at 13kg
= 28lb
Pretty heavy.

6 speed Bromptons are 27lbs.

My (made in Oregon) Bike Friday Pakit came in at 19.5 lbs and cost half as much as the Brompton.

https://www.bikefriday.com/folding-bikes/bikes/pakit/

Only the Brompton and the Bike Friday Pakit will fit on the flight deck with me (I take it with me on layovers).
Bromptons and Bike Friday Pakits will also fit in overhead bins. (W/ folding pedals)

Yeah, I know airline compatibility isn't necessarily directly related backcountry flying....but....it is.
Our primary concern is weight, and size, right?

Re: Lightest yet folding e bike?

I didn't read the title close enough...

You said *E* Bike.
My bad.

I think BF came out with an e Bike option, but I didn't look into weights...

Re: Lightest yet folding e bike?

Maybe this should be the "heaviest yet folding e bike"

As backcountry guys you also kinda need something that will go up a rocky hill. Anybody else getting peppered with ads for the RADMINI or is it just "the system" spying on what I'm researching. Did like the compromise of smaller wheels with balloon tires with some carrying (gas jugs) capability though. A porky 60 lbs (can I even lift that much into the plane?), and $1500. courierguy, what say you?

A little pricey--Euros translate into about $2600 'Murrican for base, non-accessorized version. I haven't figured out the shipping costs yet, but a Euro here and a Euro there, and pretty soon we're talking real money!

Re: Lightest yet folding e bike?

Don't let the fat tires fool you, it'd suck on any real trail riding, especially if it had hills. It has a hub drive motor (on the rear wheel), so the electric motor is ONE SPEED, though the peddler has 5 or 6 speeds the motor has one. The huge advantage the mid drive motors have, besides keeping the bike much better balanced, is that the motor benefits from the standard derailleur system, using it's gears, so more torque in the lower gears, more speed in the higher. Hub drives can overheat on long climbs, when lugged down, a mid drive you can keep the revs up, electric motors love the higher rpms, and that is where they are most efficient. Hub drives are OK I guess for running around town, for even semi serious use, go mid drive.

My current stable, all mid drives. I have yet one more, a 20" folding fat bike, with a hub drive, that i am selling to some RV'r to ride around the KOA. I bought it before i got educated. The fat bike is the roughest local terrain, the center one has folding handle bars and pedals, and just barely fits in a compartment on my crane, handy for running around town doing errands and for getting lunch. The Montague is on the right. The fat bike is hands down the most fun off road, but also the least fun if on pavement. Exactly like big tires on a paved runway.

Re: Lightest yet folding e bike?

Ad is in kilograms. Thing weighs 31#. I know we can do better. Yeah, it’s gonna cost a few grand, but it’ll weigh less than a Krispy Kreme donut. How about full carbon fiber frame, titanium hinge points, full carbon wheels for starters. Motor and battery will be all the weight but there is no getting around that.

Heck, we're all rich pilots, so why not spend $4,500 on an electric bike designed by McLaren Car designer Richard Thorpe? With that kind of pedigree you might actually expect to spend even more... #-o

Re: Lightest yet folding e bike?

If you are looking at folding E-bikes there area a couple of USA made versions. I saw at least two at a Solar vehicle event a month or so ago. Cannot remember the names but if you are interested I can try to reach out to find the names.

I do remember they are really heavy. The battery pack an electric motor are one reason and whoever designed the bikes seem to like big thick tubes. Guess they figure if you are letting the electrons do the work, who cares about weight.

How about this one? Comparatively not very expensive; a folder, ... Not much details on the way of construction or weight however...

Neat scooter, with a decent range, just in time for Christmas, ha ha. It would beat walking, for sure.

A lot more practical, and also not looking so much like a circus clown act, this little folder is small and light enough to where those with the larger aircraft could easily carry two of them. On sale too. I've said it before....but having my own transport once I land has been the biggest game changer for me flying wise since......transitioning from 2 stroke open cockpit ultralights to 4 stroke enclosed fixed wings with a cabin heater 30+ years ago. The degree of what I can do once I get there now goes off the meter, and i have this recurring fantasy of going down somewhere remote due to a mechanical problem of some sort, and then my e bike saves the day by getting my ass out of where ever I've landed. It could happen, seriously.
